Hong Kong fire death toll rises to 128, around 200 still missing • FRANCE 24 English
After 2 days battling the blaze, firefighters in Hong Kong are exhausted. The buildings reduced to smoking skeletons. Dozens are confirmed dead. Many more are feared missing. After sunrise, parts of the complex were still burning. Firefighters combed through the buildings and made final attempts to find anyone still alive. Our firefighting operation is almost complete. Despite that, we are still carrying carrying out firefighting uh operation to four individual units and damping down to various units of the seven blocks are still in progress. The disaster is already considered Hong Kong’s deadliest fire since 1948. Now the focus shifts to identifying the victims and holding someone accountable. Police arrested three men around their 50s at midnight who are the company executives in charge of the renovation at Wong Fuk Court. They are now in custody. Early findings point to flammable renovation materials that fuel the fire’s rapid spread. Bamboo scaffolding, still widely used in Hong Kong, is also under scrutiny. Calls to ban it are growing. It's worse than sad, its a reality check, you couldn't make it up. And really, from the moment the fire started taking lives, up to the present death toll count, 2 and a half thousand babies, and counting, have been born, so no losses really, just a thinning out of…. nuisance citizens. 🫤
