Debate is intensifying in Iceland regarding the country’s participation in Eurovision 2026, following a strong public intervention by Björk. The internationally acclaimed artist took a clear stance, supporting Páll Óskar’s call for the national broadcaster RÚV to withdraw from the contest, after the EBU’s decision to allow Israel to compete.
Through her social media channels, Björk reposted Óskar’s statement and openly expressed her agreement, noting:
“We fully agree with every word of Pál Óskar and wish for the RÚV board to have the courage to make the right decision on Wednesday.”
She further stressed that the EBU’s position on Israel’s participation “shows that the EBU is cowardly and incapable of setting boundaries,” echoing Óskar’s criticism, who argued that a boycott is the only effective reaction.
Björk’s intervention comes as Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, and Slovenia have already announced their withdrawal from this year’s contest in protest of the EBU’s stance.
Attention now turns to the RÚV board, which is expected to meet on Wednesday to reach a final decision. The broadcaster’s chairman, Stefán Jón Hafstein, has already publicly expressed his disappointment with the EBU, leaving open the possibility of significant developments in the coming days.
