France: Extreme footbridge replacement at Mont Blanc summit • FRANCE 24 English

At an altitude of 3,800 m in the heart of the French Alps, an extreme operation is taking place. A foot bridge is being replaced at the summit of Aguid Midi in Mont Blanc. Eight highly experienced men are tasked with replacing the 70-year-old walkway. Suspended above the void in temperatures hovering at -20°. Every move counts. The wind is blowing at about 20 km an hour on the northeast facing terrace. And it’s not just the view that is astonishing. The monstrous 16 meter long steel structure was delivered by helicopter, meaning the workers had more than two tons of metal alloy to maneuver. The perilous mission was 4 months in the making for 1 hour of actual installation work. It’s important to note that when we flew the foot bridge in by helicopter, the temperature was 18° below zero and they had to keep it under control. These are projects that require a lot of organization and logistics. We do a lot of preparation beforehand. This new foot bridge is designed to withstand winds of up to 254 km per hour. The goal now is to finalize the work by December 15th before the reopening of the site on December 20th.
