Ellen Walshe and Daniel Wiffen enjoyed more medal success today at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Lublin, Poland.
Walshe won silver in the 200m individual medley final, in a time of 2:04.78. The gold went to Dutch swimmer Marrit Steenbergen with an impressive 2:01.83, while Israel’s Anastasia Gorbenko took bronze in 2:05.32.
Walshe showed great resilience – she was in eighth place early in the race but powered through to touch for second.
Wiffen won bronze in the men’s 800m freestyle, clocking 7:30.14. The race was won by Hungary’s Zalan Sarkany (7:26.84), with Belgium’s Lucas Henveaux taking silver (7:28.03).
Wiffen was sixth at one stage but put in a late surge to move up to second before fading slightly in the final metres to settle for third.
This bronze adds to Wiffen’s impressive medal haul in Lublin with gold secured in the 1500m freestyle yesterday and a bronze medal won in the 400m freestyle earlier in the week.
Jack Cassin closed the evening for Ireland in the men’s 200m butterfly semi-final. The National Centre Limerick swimmer was over a second faster than his morning swim of 1:54.71, touching in 1:53.62 for fifth in his semi-final and 12th overall.
