Former EU top diplomat Mogherini held in fraud probe • FRANCE 24 English
If confirmed, the allegations against Federica Mogarini could constitute procurement fraud, corruption, conflict of interest, and violation of professional secrecy. That’s according to the European public prosecutor’s office, which has taken the EU’s former foreign policy chief and two others into custody. Indeed, we can uh confirm that the police was today at the AS buildings and this is part of the ongoing um investigation of the activities that uh took place um uh before uh uh in the previous mandate. Mogarini was Italy’s foreign minister and then the EU’s foreign policy chief from 2014 to 2019 before taking over 5 years ago as head of the College of Europe, a prestigious institution that trains European civil servants. The prosecutor’s office suspects Mogarini of favoritism in the awarding of a training program for future diplomats, the EU diplomatic academy, to the College of Europe in 2021. In 2022, Mogarini also took the helm of the academy. The Belgian Federal Police searched both officers Tuesday and made two additional arrests, a senior European Commission official, Stefanosino, as well as the College of Europe’s deputy head. The European Public Prosecutor’s Office was established in 2021 and is an independent body of the European Union tasked with fighting offenses against the block’s financial interests.
The EU’s former foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini was taken into custody Tuesday as police staged raids probing suspected fraud over contracts to train future European diplomats. Mogherini, who was high representative for foreign affairs from 2014 to 2019, now leads the College of Europe graduate school whose premises were searched along with the offices of the EEAS diplomatic service.
