  1. For those keeping track, that’s total casualties, not just deaths.

Though the death toll itself is a numbingly large fraction of that. Several hundred thousand at least.

In all its history, Russia has never lost this many people before in a conflict that wasn’t a World War. Not the Great Northern War. Not when Napoleon overran the country and Moscow burned. Not when Russia got pasted in the Crimean War.

And the thing is, this is an entirely self-inflicted injury. No one wanted war with Russia. No one wanted anything from Russia. All of the things that Russia itself wanted to secure — access to Crimea and Sevastopol, naval power projection into the Black Sea and Mediterranean, the reputation of Russian arms, a zone of neutrality along its borders, access to lucrative fossil fuel markets, continued pre-eminence in the Russophonic world — it has largely or entirely lost as a result of the invasion.

  2. This should be a major blow to Russia, which has nearly half of the population of the US. Note that the population of the US armed forces ranges around 1.3 million. And Russia lost as much in a stalemate war with a nation smaller than both of these countries.

  3. What are the deaths? Casualty rates are nebulous and hard to interpret (e.g. complete disability vs able to hold a job or return and fight). We need death counts.

  4. Russia has lost 1/3 of my entire countries population according to this. That’s fucking nuts.

  5. Even if these numbers are true, they still gained like 5m people from captured oblasts and refugees who fled from Ukraine to Russia, so overall they are still net positive.
