I shared a version of this guide earlier this year, but felt a website was needed to unpack the different options fully. So after an unreasonable number of hours, I put together the necessary data and website.
I hope this is digestible enough for the average person to help those looking to take that first step, or for people who are equally passionate and want to get their friends or family involved.

Every time I post these guides, there is always feedback on things that can improve, or I got wrong. Please do share, as it is the best way for these to evolve
Why would you move from one of 3 US browsers to another US browser (Firefox), same question for a few others in the list.
For Linux, I would add OpenSuse Tumbleweed. Also I like the idea behind Zen Browser but I heard it has quite a lot of hiccups, not there yet. At least for Windows
This is a good guide, the website is a very nice addition. I have multiple questions, suggestions and criticism, but I will also say that I take my hat off to you for actually doing it and committing the time.
Spotify should be on the list to boycott, not switch to.
Yet still no alternative for the full Microsoft stack. Someone should really pour money into developing a true competitor.
Edit: downvotes just prove how many are utterly clueless about *business* requirements.
I find that pretending that it is a matter of weeks is disingenuous. Some migrations are super long projects. Like immich. You just don’t install the app and go. You need to know how to run this stuff safely so you don’t lose your data. Same for file storage. You might need a NAS, delve into self hosting, understand trade offs, etc…
On another note Deezer might be originally French but it is not french owners anymore, I believe they’re from the Americas now.
I support using European alternatives but.. aside from Spotify, the difference in quality between the main products and European alternatives is genuinely insulting to even suggest it. Comically enough most viable alternatives are also American (Firefox, DuckDuckGo, Signal).
What about the alternative for Reddit?
There needs to be discussion about domination of Visa and MasterCard in financial systems. Domination of American big tech in the cloud sphere. And their monopoly in software ecosystem. It’s not just about a random browser or something tbh, there are far more critical areas where this needs to start.
I support European alternatives but many of these are just laughable. Plus, don’t assume because they’re European they’re nice. Cutthroat businesses are not exactly endemic to north America, and we have loooots of examples here
Sweet, have done most of that or at least have build redundancy 🙂
What about Reddit?
Europe needs more builders. You should use European products because they are the best in their category not purely because of ideological reasons. You need more builders and entrepreneurs for that
To replace Microsoft Office, I would also advise Collabora Office, based in UK, or ONLYOFFICE, based in Latvia.
To replace Windows for gaming, I would advise a more popular option, Bazzite, which is a pure community effort (no company).
Just a note, because something is an EU product, that doesn’t make it ethical.
Wouldnt say the Operating Systems list is complete.
Recommendations are Mint/Ubunutu/Pop, but any other like FedoraArch/Endeavour/bazzite/cachy are just as good.
Pop also isn’t just for gaming, it simply already comes with nvidia gpu drivers if you want, just a q.o.l. feature.
You should also mark foss, it’s actually important
I feel like not including Reddit is crazy
That’s a very good one and with your permission I will share it further. Thank you
Yeah the only time I would truly care about this would be in a corporate setting where we want to control who has access to our data. There really isn’t a viable alternative to M365, azure, AWS etc within Europe. (Except for American companies hosting their datacenters here)
Oh come on when are we going to get over this tribalism? We’re going to shoot ourselves in the foot even harder than the rest of the world?
No one uses the alternative apps because they stink, not because America is evil. They just produce better tech.
Do you like capitalism or do you want some crony system where we prop up things that stink?
Cool! A feature so that others can suggest software would be good, also makes it interactive. Eg brave is missing and I am sure the community knows many other tools.
Very good!
And GrapheneOS is a nice alternative to Android and iOS
Im so good on that brodie. Why would I hinder myself with shit apps. Also sneaking linux there xd naah
I think posts like this really underestimate how integrated the world is.
Nothing you use on the internet would work without contributions from all over the world. AWS, CloudFlare, TSMC, Crucial, etc.
There’s basically one niche semiconductor company in all of Europe (NXP) and while it’s important, it’s niche. Think about that. Europe by itself really couldn’t produce a modern computer or smart phone. Neither could America, though it would be much closer.
If American cloud services companies like CloudFlare, AWS, Microsoft etc go down, so do “European” services. Spotify is technically a European company but has thousands of employees across the globe. Apple, Google etc have many employees in Europe.
Globalization already happened.
Some if these recommendations are shit tier garbage, lol.
