People that were obese with health issues that were able to transform their lives are awesome. These celebrities that were maybe only 10 to 15 pounds overweight or not even overweight at all and then turned themselves into skeletons are very strange. My mom is on it and she said she would never risk the side effects for just a little bit of weight, it’s not a walk in the park. The risk of permanent gastroparesis is enough for me to say no.
I had a friend who would say this about the Covid vaccine after doing a bump off a toilet seat at a dive bar.
I think the answer is they are (hopefully) trusting their healthcare professional. As with all medicine.
GLP-1 agonist drugs are a f***ing medical breakthrough. And yes, we know what “they” are putting in it. The mysterious “they” are putting in Semaglutide. It’s not a mystery or a conspiracy. And not even that new.
The level of misinformation that is allowed to just permeate is astounding.
People are now doing the same things with vaccines. “Nobody knows what **’THEY’** are putting in these vaccines!”
A. Who the f••• are **they**?
B. Yes we do know exactly what is in all of this stuff.
Semiglutides will let me live longer than the extra hundred lbs I was carrying around.
I think it should be fine for people that are obese and have struggled to lose weight but those who look ok and maybe a bit heavy, it’s dystopian vibes
I’ve lost 155 lbs on one and have never felt or been healthier 🤷♀️
I think its fair to have a problem with the pro-eating disorder content that is on the rise, but its important to separate that issue from fear mongering a medication that has a lot of benefits. Kate isnt a doctor and doctors *do* know what is in these meds.
No medication is 100% safe. It’s just that the side effects are worth it when your alternative is more severe. She’s not talking about those instances, she’s talking about people who are abusing it because society rewards thinness.
It’s like everything in life, abuse is going to happen but that doesn’t mean it’s not safe or effective for people using it correctly. I was on Ozempic, got under 200lbs from nearly 300lbs. Honestly I don’t know how anyone can abuse it though, the poops alone were absolute hell.
Once you realise she’s talking about the size 2-4 celeb crowd competing to be as emaciated as possible – after she herself has visibly existed in the crowd as a relatively thicker waisted actress with a lot of success – you’ll be a lot more accepting of this statement
Eh depends. As with any medication, consult a medical professional before use. For certain demographics, losing weight can improve comorbidities such as HF. As for what’s in it, GLP-1 agonists are not new. They been around since the 90s where they were initially used as a diabetic medication.
Yes we do know exactly what they are putting in it. They have to disclose this to the FDA in excruciating detail to get approval. Fucking idiots.
I have a reasonable confidence in healthcare professionals and understand that my lack of knowledge of “what’s in it” or inability to pronounce certain scientific words is in no way an indication of the efficacy of well researched medications.
So many people in this thread are ignoring the obvious context of her comment: the current Ozempic craze in Hollywood. Yes, the use of weight-loss drugs for superficial and non-medical purposes is “terrifying,” and that’s clearly what she’s talking about
The issue isn’t the weight loss drugs themselves but celebs (and others) who are not overweight using them for vanity rather than health. I have a friend who was obese, type 2 diabetic with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Using Ozempic she lost 60 Ibs and improved her health substantially. For her Ozempic has been life transformative.
I have another friend- also obese- who tried Ozempic but got the stomach paralysis where she didn’t have a bowel movement for 2+ weeks. She was constantly nauseous and had painful stomach cramping. After 2 months she gave up. She lost 20 pounds while she was on the Ozempic and she’s managed to not only maintain that weight loss but continue to lose more naturally through diet and exercise. She says she doesn’t know if Ozempic actually suppressed her appetite because she was so nauseous all the time that she didn’t have an appetite anyway.
As a doctor can I tell you exactly what glp1 will do in the long run to 1 in 1,000,000 people who may have a serious event? No.
As a doctor can I tell you what will happen to the remaining 999,999 / 1,000,000 if they remain obese? Yes and it’s much worse.
The fear mongering about this stuff is misplaced. The “control group” isn’t “nothing happens,” it’s “you go blind and kidneys fail from diabetes” or “die of a heart attack”
Redditors read the article challenge
i always come to r/entertainment for healthcare advice
And yet alcohol is still celebrated in the US and if you don’t drink, it’s weird.
I was on it for 9 months this year and lost 30 lbs. I didn’t lose all of the weight I needed to lose (still have 15-20 to go), but I no longer am pre-diabetic!
The side effects are AWFUL. I just couldn’t take it anymore, after a few months, I had daily indigestion, and headaches so bad that I could barely function by the 9th month. And 1/3 of my hair fell out.
I can’t understand people who take it if they don’t have a ton of weight to lose. It’s not worth it!
I doubt they care.
I was on Wegovy for 5 months, and it’s not the terrifying drug people who’ve never needed it love to talk about.
I had the annoying side effects, but overall it was wonderful having a normal brain that wasn’t obsessed with food.
I don’t want to die from heart disease, Kate
It’s easy to say that when you haven’t struggled with obesity yourself.
“Do they know what they are putting in?” Um, kinda, yeah actually.
Something is wrong when people who don’t need it use it
Had the same thought. And it’s advertised. EVERYWHERE! Good luck all you all using it. There are certainly instances where it’s medically beneficial. But for those using it as a cosmetic, you get what you get kids.
To paraphrase Wanda Sykes from one of her comedy specials:
“People always going, you don’t know what’s in the vaccine. That’s right, I don’t know, and if they told me, I still wouldn’t know.”
They have saved my life. That is all I need. I dint care what anyone thinks.
I mean people are taking drugs that trick you into not getting hungry meant for people with real afflictions just so they can look thin.
It’s insanity. Like they’re chemically starving themselves so they can appear more bangable.
Same ones denying that vaccines work using this shit.
I’m glad someone in the limelight finally said it.
I don’t think everyone read the piece because a lot of people here seem to be reacting to what they think Winslet said than what she actually said.
Direct quote from the article: “…so many people are on weight-loss drugs. It’s so varied. Some are making choices to be themselves, others do everything they can to not be themselves.”
Remember, she was absolutely excoriated for being “too fat.” Seems like she doesn’t want that pressure exerted on others.
Very few people think it’s healthy to turn into a stick figure. But some people are clearly trying to do it.
Does Kate winslet know? Why would we trust her opinion on medications?
