RUSSELLVILLE — Representatives of Arkansas Nuclear One presented a $5,000 donation to the Arkansas Tech University Women in STEM registered student organization on Thursday.

ATU Women in STEM members and Arkansas Tech students Kaitlin Edwards of Clarksville, Joy Skaggs of Russellville, Abigail Turnbull of Fort Smith and Katelyn Valdez of Salado, Texas, accepted the gift on behalf of their organization, according to a news release from the university.

The ATU Women in STEM organization is “committed to empowering students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics” with a goal of fostering “academic and professional growth by connecting members with research opportunities, internships, mentorship, volunteer work and community outreach,” according to a post on the ATU Facebook page.

STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Arkansas Nuclear One was represented at the check presentation by three officers from the Arkansas Nuclear One chapter of the U.S. Women in Nuclear organization: Odessa Hedgecock, president; Laura McDaniel, vice president; and Krisie Reeves, metrics coordinator.

Also in attendance were ATU President Russell Jones; Bryan Fisher, ATU vice president for advancement; John Jackson, dean of the ATU College of STEM; John Krohn, associate dean of the ATU College of STEM; Jeanine Myers, ATU professor of mathematics; and Jessica Young, ATU professor of physics.
