My dad was at a shop in Maghera when a foreign-registered jeep pulled up beside him. The driver rolled down the window and asked for directions to Magherafelt. He noticed the woman in the passenger seat was visibly upset and crying. Both of them looked elderly.

My dad asked if she was alright or if they needed any help, and the driver said she was just distressed because they were lost. Since my dad was heading towards Magherafelt anyway, he told them to follow him.

When they got to Magherafelt, they told my dad to pull in and come back to speak to them. He got out to check if they were okay, and they handed him a watch, no money exchanged hands, nothing else was said.

It all feels a bit off. What’s the catch here?

  1. Deja vu, wasn’t there another story in this sub once about someone being handed a watch out of a car 😂

  2. From some quick interneting its a cheap Chinese watch. Feels scammy though.

  3. Probably trafficking and hush money but im not a criminal investigater and theres limited info.

Editing to say this is sarcasm, someone probs just had a bad day

  4. Its a fake Chinese watch, about 20 quid. Don’t know why they gave him it though.

  5. Does your Dad drive a nice car? I’d be checking that box for a tracking device, maybe an AirTag or something similar.

  6. Mi5 cost cutting operations so they’re throwing boxed watches at people in town. Actually wouldn’t put it past them lol.

  7. Could be a tracker in there, check the box and watch for tampering. If it’s too good to be true…

  8. Based on what I’m reading on the other threads posted about these watches it’s pretty likely that the old couple got scammed out of their money by someone flogging these fake luxury watches. Which would explain why the woman was so upset.

I suspect he handed it off to you just to get rid of it out of their lives.

  9. Perhaps he sells this stuff and is just grateful for your dad’s help. If it felt really iffy to your dad report it to the non emergency police number maybe it will be of help them later.

I’ve had family move back home with their car on foreign number plates. The cops often followed them in the weeks before they changed to NI plates. Reckon criminals would know this and prefer to rent a local car while up to no good.

  10. Search the brand and you’ll see they are often linked with a scam

  11. Best case it’s a cheap thank you.
Medium case a dry run on sob story, want to buy a watch, maybe bottled the script as your dad didn’t look enough of a mark.
Worst case tracker, doesn’t seem likely but I’d guess in the box not the watch, easy to have a look in both.
Good of your old man to help them tho, that’s just plain nice.

  12. Maybe it’s a cursed watch, like a modern day monkey’s paw and the old lad was passing on the curse. Seems reasonable anyway

  13. There’s some kind of trafficking going on where they are being forced to do or transport something they were picking up in or dropping off in Magarafelt? And they gave you the watch as a clue so you would go get help because someone was listening in on their car ride?

Or there could be a factory there making these counterfeit watches and they are being forced to work there.

  14. The watch looks like cheap junk to me. AliExpress special.

  15. Watch is chinese junk. Worth about £50 if that.

  16. To distract you from reporting the girl being trafficked.

Did you report this to the Police on 101?

If your dad raised a concern about the girl could the response be that he was actually trying to sell them a fake watch?

  17. Odd. But I can tell you that’s a cheap as chips watch. It actually says tourbillon (a rare complication normally only found on very high end watches), which it obviously isn’t.
