Squatters at the historic Dwejra Lines have dismantled illegal structures after weeks of pressure, the Malta Rangers reported on Tuesday.

The rangers reported last week that the squatters had closed off an area of the lines with a fence and locks and refused to move despite the efforts of various authorities.  Despite the Environment Resources Authority telling the occupants that they had to remove everything from the trees and to respect the area, they put poles into the ground and fenced off an even larger area. They later installed CCTVs in the trees.

On Sunday the police told Times of Malta that officers had assisted the competent authorities at an on-site inspection, during which the individuals involved were warned that they must remove the objects, or else face charges.

“Thanks to pressure from NGOs, Authorities and the general public, the occupants have decided to remove their items,” the rangers said on Tuesday.

“This is a prime example of how we all create change when uniting for a good cause.”

The unit thanked Rabat police, ERA and Ramblers Malta for their support.

“The squatters now only have two tents left, we will continue to monitor the site so that no further abuse is seen,” the rangers added.Â
