Thought that some of you might like to see a couple of photos that I took on my Canon Ixus when the London Eye, then known as the Millennium Wheel, was being hoisted into place.

Do I remember correctly… Was it intended to be temporary initially? Was that a thing?
(Well it may have been colloquially known as the Millennium Wheel but clearly I didn’t read the blindingly obvious sign on it 🤣)
They have to do this every night when they pack it away
Does anyone remember when it was lying on its side and they tried to raise it but there was a problem and then they had to put it down again for a few days before trying again? The attraction was going to be sponsored by British Airways so Richard Branson sent an airship over central London with “BA can’t get it up” emblazoned on one side. I was young enough not to get the joke and so had to ask my mum…
Ah the millennium wheel
I have to be honest I can’t picture the place without it now even though it’s kinda ugly/out of place in terms of architecture around there
Woah 1 slip and there’s a giant hollow wheel destroying some of the city
I remember watching it go up on my commute from charing cross, amazing, filmed wimbledon and the hustle on there in later years!!
Remember having to sit cross legged on the floor during assembly
remember seeing it laying flat over the thames, a dyer it was floated in – on boats! – before this lift.
Ah yes the annual relocation of the eye to winter wonderland.
Great photos!
Fun fact: It’s the height it is because that’s the width of the Thames.
