Former German Chancellor Schröder wants to give up his post as head of the supervisory board at the Russian oil company Rosneft. This was announced by the company. Schröder had stated that it would be impossible for him to extend his mandate.

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD) wants to leave the supervisory board of the Russian state oil company Rosneft. Schröder, who is Rosneft’s supervisory board chairman, has said that it is impossible for him to extend his mandate on the board, the company announced. No details or reasons were given.

The 78-year-old Schröder, a longtime friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has recently been under massive pressure in the face of demands in Germany that he stop acting as an oil and gas lobbyist for Russia because of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. Schröder caused a stir, among other things, when he criticized Ukraine’s demands for arms deliveries as “saber rattling” in the midst of the escalation before Russia’s attack on the neighboring country.
    Privileges lost, threatened by sanctions

Within the SPD, several motions are underway to expel Schröder from the party. Just yesterday, the Bundestag budget committee cut off the former chancellor’s office and staff funds – on the grounds that he was no longer performing duties related to his former office. More than 400,000 euros had flowed from the state coffers last year for personnel expenses in Schröder’s office. According to the decision, however, the former chancellor is still entitled to a pension and personal protection. Schröder is having the withdrawal of his former chancellor’s privileges legally reviewed.

At the European level, too, criticism of Schröder had grown louder and louder since the Russian attack on Ukraine. In a resolution yesterday, the EU Parliament spoke out in favor of sanctions against Schröder should he hold on to his posts in Russian companies despite the war.

Schröder also involved in Nord Stream 2

In addition to his seat on Rosneft’s supervisory board, the SPD politician also holds leadership positions in the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 pipeline projects – both natural gas pipelines through the Baltic Sea linking Russia and Germany. The pending commissioning of Nord Stream 2 has since been put on hold by the German government.

According to Rosneft, German businessman Matthias Warnig, who sat on the supervisory board with Schröder, also withdrew from the board. Warnig is head of the Nord Stream 2 operating company.
