Pope Leo XIV expressed the view that achieving peace in Ukraine without active European involvement is unrealistic. Such words were spoken on December 9 after a meeting with Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky.
“An attempt to reach a peaceful agreement without involving Europe in negotiations is unrealistic. The war is taking place in Europe, and I believe that Europe should be part of the security guarantees that are sought today and in the future.”
– Pope Leo XIV
The Pontiff also emphasized that he will not comment on the peace plan proposed by the United States for Ukraine, but warned about statements about Europe that “attempt to break what, in my opinion, should be a very important alliance”.

The Pontiff also noted that he watches the events in Ukraine with sadness and calls for peace. In the context of discussing a possible visit to Kyiv, Leo XIV expressed hope for such a visit but admitted that the issue requires a realistic approach: “I hope for this. I do not know when – we need to be realistic about these things. Maybe it will happen.”

The Pope noted that “the Holy See is ready to provide space and opportunities for negotiations” regarding ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.
In the context of international discussions, it is worth noting that interviews with politicians and statements by leaders of various countries emphasize the need for active European participation in negotiations and diplomacy, as well as the necessity of trust between sides to move toward lasting peace in the region.
Within a broader diplomatic context, a picture emerges of Washington clinging to its plans for peace talks with Ukraine and Russia, while at the same time expecting European partners to take responsibility for ensuring security. In this light, Pope Leo XIV’s position emphasizes the importance of joint and transparent dialogue between Europe and other interested parties for a stable and just peace in Ukraine.
In summary, the Pope’s statements focus on close European involvement in diplomacy and on the need for mutual trust between countries for long-term peace. Europe’s role in this process remains decisive, as only joint efforts and responsible policy can create conditions for stable security in the region.
