Good, the EU should try to help all the countries in the region that want to get away from Russian influence and evolve. Moldova has good agricultural lands so it would also be in the EU’s interest to have a partner in Moldova. And maybe one day a new member.
Since their local press is a mix of incompetence and corruption, maybe EU could support Moldova by explaining to the mere mortals living there why they have the highest inflation rate in Europe this year. Like it wasn’t enough that they were already the poorest country in Europe. Because the local politicians there keep blaming each other for it.
Few countries have been as mistreated as Moldova in the past 30 years. They fought an uneven independence war against the Russians in 1992 with only their police forces, as the newly independent Moldovan state lacked a military at the time. Since then, the Russians remained entrenched in Transnistria while the West utterly abandoned Moldova in exchange for gas. Left to the mercy of their Russian tormentors, Moldovans became the poorest European country. It is high time for the EU to start helping Moldova for real.
