LA CROSSE (WKBT) — La Crosse is raising awareness for the impacts of road salt through a new educational initiative.

The Salt Smart campaign teaches about the effects of salt on waterways, infrastructure and wildlife. The campaign encourages residents to also use sand and non-toxic de-icers as alternatives to traditional road salt.

Sami Meyer, Outdoor Recreation Coordinator for La Crosse Parks, explained that using more salt doesn’t improve effectiveness.

“The quantity is not going to make the ice melt faster. In fact what it does is it washes away into our lawns, gardens, it can wash down into our storm drains and then out into our waterways,” Meyer said.

The campaign aims to educate residents about proper winter maintenance practices that protect the environment while maintaining safety during winter weather conditions.

To learn more about safe salting practices, residents can visit the La Crosse Parks and Recreation online.
