INDIANAPOLIS (WKRC) — Community members in Indiana will be receiving a smelly card in the mail sometime in December.

According to WXIN, Citizens Energy Group announced that customers in central Indiana will be receiving an “education card” with an unusual scent this Christmas season.

The outlet reports that Citizens confirmed Monday that it will be mailing out envelopes containing a “natural gas smell” scratch-and-sniff card to help customers identify a gas leak.

The cards are scented with mercaptan, the same odorant used by the company that allows customers to smell natural gas, WXIN reported. Mercaptan is commonly described as having an odor similar to rotten eggs.

“We want to proactively educate all Central Indiana residents about detecting natural gas. The scratch-and-sniff card gives our customers, their families, and their communities a safe way to get familiar with the odor. Natural gas leaks can be dangerous if they are ignored,” J.P. Ghio, vice president of energy operations at Citizens, told WXIN.

The report states that the cards will also include safety information on what actions to take if there is a gas leak. The letters are expected to be delivered sometime between December 10 and January.
