A week before leaders meet, the EU is turning the screws. The message to Belgium is that if it does not come on board, its diplomats, ministers and leaders will lose their voice around the EU table. Officials would put to the bottom of the pile Belgium’s wishlist and concerns related to the EU’s long-term budget for 2028–2034, which would cause the government a major headache, particularly when negotiations get into the crucial final stretch in 18 months’ time.
Its views on EU proposals will not be sought. Its phone calls will go unanswered, the diplomat said.

From what I’ve read, the EU plans to use the special majority route since Hungary and I may hope Belgium will vote against this proposal, making an unanimous decision impossible. Trying to pass this as an economic emergency to be able to make due with a special majority will never hold in the EU court of justice and Euroclear, and Belgium (I hope), will fight this decision at that court for sure.
This all feels like a very bad move from the EU and disjuncted from reality.
Other smaller countries will take note how they can be bullied and thrown under the bus.

People act as if Euroclear is owned by the Belgian government. It’s not. Really not the governments decision and definitely not the Belgian governments responsibility if it all goes tits up afterwards. Belgian politicians afraid of Russia suing us afterwards is comical. Sue us where? No court would even hear the case. Belgium wants to be tough against crime, they have no problem seizing and taking drug money and absorbing it int their own coffers. This is no different. Something smells fishy to me. Some backroom deals? Blackmail from Moscow? Somethings off.
