SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — Sun Prairie Utilities, a locally owned, not-for-profit water and electric utility company, is taking part in a new long-term agreement between its power supplier, WPPI Energy, and NextEra Energy Resources, promising to meet local electricity needs with nuclear energy.
“By maintaining a diverse mix of resources that includes nuclear, renewables, and natural gas, we help protect our customers from cost swings that can occur when relying on any single source,” said Jill Weiss, general manager at Sun Prairie Utilities.
According to city officials, WPPI will continue taking 168 megawatts of electric generation from the Point Nuclear Plants into the 2050s.
Point Beach Nuclear is a source of emissions-free baseload generation located near Two Rivers, Wis. It has supplied power since the early 1970s.
“Maintaining a diverse, balanced portfolio is one of the WPPI membership’s greatest strengths,” WPPI President and CEO Mike Peters said. “Securing this emissions-free baseload resource at a known cost supports long-term stability for our member communities in a rapidly changing energy industry.”
This agreement follows the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s approval of the plant’s second license renewal in September and allows the facility to continue operating for 20 additional years.
