Belgium has requested up to 240 AGM-114R2 Hellfire missiles and associated support services in a deal valued at up to $79 million, marking a notable expansion of the country’s precision-strike capabilities.
The U.S. State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Belgium covering 240 Hellfire missiles (AGM-114R2) along with a broad package of technical assistance, logistics and sustainment items. The Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has formally notified Congress of the proposed transaction.
According to the notification, the request includes U.S. Government and contractor engineering support, technical and logistics services, support equipment, communications and training systems, ammunition, spare parts, consumables, accessories, and repair-and-return services. Facility design support, classified and unclassified documentation, personnel training, and associated program-support elements are also part of the package.

The AGM-114R2 is an enhanced version of the AGM-114R “Romeo” multi-role Hellfire missile. While the R-series introduced a universal warhead and flexible employment against armored vehicles, structures and soft targets, the R2 variant features upgraded guidance software and improved terminal-phase tracking for higher accuracy against small or fast-moving targets.
The R2 model also incorporates refinements to its multi-purpose warhead to optimize penetration and fragmentation effects while offering lower-collateral-damage options suited for urban environments. In addition, the missile’s updated software package provides broader compatibility with modern NATO aerial platforms, including helicopters and UAVs. These improvements make the AGM-114R2 a more precise, adaptable and integration-friendly evolution of the standard AGM-114R.
