That’s the danger of gerrymandering. You can give yourself a massive advantage. But the harder you push, the more risky it is. If there is a big pendulum swing, they risk losing everything.
I’ll explain why.
Think of it like pizza. There’s a pile of wonderful pepperoni in the middle. And awful pineapple around the edges. There will be 6 pieces of pizza, all that matters is how you cut it. If you cut the middle into two small pieces that are basically all pepperoni, the outer 4 pieces are going to be predominately pineapple.
But if you don’t do that, if you try and eliminate pepperoni pieces entirely then you put some pepperoni on every piece. In theory, the cutter believes there’s slightly more pineapple than pepperoni on every piece. They believe this because one year ago, for the first time, the pepperoni count was different. But if you miscounted the pepperoni; If the pile of pepperoni is bigger than you thought; or if the pepperoni is now angry that masked high school dropouts are picking up their grand parents and sending them to a place they named “Alligator Alcatraz” because they have brown skin and an accent. Then everything changes.
The pepperoni now outweighs the pineapple. Not just in the center, but in literally every piece. What used to be two heavy pepperoni pieces is gone. And now EVERY piece is pepperoni dominant.
They used to have 4 pineapple pieces that have 60% pineapple. And 2 pepperoni pieces that were 90% pepperoni. But they pushed too far. By trying to make all 6 pieces 52% pineapple, and 48% pepperoni, they put smaller piles of pepperoni on every piece. But they miscounted. And now it looks like the pepperoni will overwhelm the pineapple for the whole damn pizza.
EDIT:
The pizza analogy is my own, but I FINALLY tracked down the actual articles that I remembered discussing this.

Relevant quotes for TL’DR
* “Push the line too far, and the smallest shift in the tide of public opinion will wash away all your advantage.”
* “A +1 map is safe, but a +4 map may flip entirely if the vote shifts.”
Basically what the moderates and dems warned you about.
Having solid red districts mean that even when tbe economy goes to shit, or you close all the rural hospitals, or you pardon the druglords that are ravaging rural communities with meth and fentenol, or you convince a bunch of communities that the way forward is to ship everyone off to ICE or to a war with venezeula… like you will still have enough deep red districts that you can maintain control of congress and of the state as a whole.
But when you gerrymander, those deep red districts become red tinted districts. So now, ignorable issues become big problems. Things that would shift the vote 10/15/20 points are things you can still recover from if the district is 100% deep red rural country boys. If you now have cities and suburbs and the county, then idk erasing the middle class may turn a safe red district into a solid blue one. Suddenly if all those country boys got to drive 2 hours to the nearest hospital and youve effectively eliminated Ambulances. Then you are one major 4 car crash from a PR disaster, that flips a district. Suppressing jobs reports when the one factory that supplied 70% of the jobs closes means those people are t going to polls now. It doesnt matter to trump cause he is more interested in turning the White House into his retirement home and making deals with Saudi Arabia. He doesnt care if his tariffs close down half of your town and knock your family out of the “upper poor” class into the bottom of the bottom.
A lot of these gop leaders are slowly getting it that the dems still have a shot at flipping control, And theres a whole lot of people in this country that are about to learn how much worse its gonna get.
Surprised, but not surprised really.
I’m curious, with the supposed 5 extra seats in Texas, are the Republicans running uncontested there? If not, could they end up Democrat?
Couldn’t find anything solid to reference, so not sure.
Well, let’s hope that the voters keep this up.
Voters, please, for the love of all that is good and holy, KEEP THIS UP.
Vote. Vote even if you think its a landslide.
Love this for them.
Stay mad and upset!
Gerrymandering only gets you so far. If you piss off enough people and they stop bitching long enough to vote, you can be in trouble.
I’m not surprised and I’m kind of cautiously optimistic at this point. I live in NC and our state is the very definition of purple. The last poll I read had people registered as Democrats around 32 to 33% people registered as Republicans around 31% and independent around 30%, but the Republicans gerrymandered so hard that 10 out of 14 districts are red. And here’s why they may have shot themselves in the foot. The Republicans gained power. Then they start doing things that piss people off. But instead of changing their political message or enacting policies of public likes they gerrymander harder. They keep doing that to the point where it doesn’t actually solve the problem now the majority of people are pissed and they can’t gerrymander anymore so come midterms, we may see a huge political shift. However, I am worried about something. I predict if the Republicans know they’re gonna lose power and cannot gerrymander anymore they’re gonna resort cheating worse than they already do (voter disenfranchising, kicking people off of the rolls, making it harder to vote, putting partisan hacks in charge of election integrity).
All the democrats got pissed and showed up to vote while most Republicans couldn’t since they had to work second jobs to pay for their escalating healthcare costs.
Democrats can win when the DNC isn’t massively involved.
Womp womp!
Good news!!
Gerrymandering only works when your party is somewhat normal and people are not pissed off, think the GOP missed that part
Maybe people don’t like traitorous behavior
Gerrymandering in front of a huge wave against your party might not be the best idea. I wonder if Texas will turn blue…
Democracy is coming for both the congressional house and senate! MAGA propaganda trying to limit gains to the house. We need 20 senators more to convict all of them. Gaslighting when healthcare costs triple doesn’t work. We the People are coming for every MAGA candidate in 2026
Gerrymander every state. All of them. Red, blue, who cares. Nothing is going to change until the system gets so fucked up that people will actually get off the couch and do something about, and we aren’t even close enough to it being bad enough.
Get used to it !
