Love my European brothers and sisters but the quacks at Brussels I can not relate to in any way
United Europe; French beaurocrats, German police, Italian military, Spanish work ethic, post-Soviet culture, Greek economy, and Swiss morals.

I left my country 10 years ago to work in Sweden, then Germany, got my PhD in Belgium, moved to France after graduating my doctorate, worked remotely for an early stage spanish startup. Moved back to Portugal one year ago and now work for a European institution, and travel almost every week between my base (Porto), Brussels and Luxembourg. I have friends all over Europe, speak 4 (PT, ES, EN, FR) EU languages fluently, and can order beer and food in at least another 4 (IT, DE, NL, GR), picked up habits, tastes, traditions, quirks, from every single place I lived in. No longer feel simply portuguese. My flag is blue, it has 12 golden five-pointed stars, and I will fight for it if I have to.

A divided Europe conquered the world, a united Europe will conquer the stars.
I seriously think that the EU needs to be reformed, in my humble opinion we need a capital that is both central and of historical importance, so that people can connect to it, it can be Wien or Aachen (just a couple of examples) and most importantly the EU must begin to emphasize its connections to the history and cultures of the continent, as of right now too many people (at least in my country) sees the EU as just a distant bureaucratic superstructure, we need (a healthy) propaganda, with monuments and cultural talks, events or even art exhibitions sponsored by the Union around the continent to teach how the idea of a united Europe is deeply rooted in Rome, in the Middle Ages, in the Age of Enlightenment and in all our damn history.
Yes. But I’m tire of the actual european politicians, it seems that they are not able to react to menaces, and issues putting the Union existence at risk.
In 1985 nobody expect that USSR would fall 6 year after. We for the good of Europe and their possibility of international relevancy we can’t let to happen, even to kick out the current EU administration

Well yeah no thanks I’d rather keep sovereignty. When you unite things like states and Soviet republics you end up crushing cultural diversity, you end up fighting wars that feel even more retarded than the previous ones, and so on and so forth. The EU is awesome and I love it, but I think it’s good each one of us gets to do their own thing. And what if a member wants to leave? Will we use military force to stop the secessionists? You really have not thought this through.

I had a crazy idea once.
Imagine an optional military service for everyone who turns 18. But there’s a catch. You’re gonna have a couple of months of basic training in your country, and then be sent to another country with other recruits from different places of Europe to serve for between one and two years.
Over that time, you’re gonna be sent to different camps all over Europe, meet people your age from different countries, maybe fall in love, and potentially make friends all over the union.
After a couple of years, once you come back home, you’d have some money saved from that time, lots of experiences and memories and, most importantly, a feeling that you’re no longer from wherever you came… but a proud citizen of the European Union.
So you want us to try again? You didn’t like it the last time we tried…

But I hate the savages more, so I am stuck with all of you barbarians.
