Got a scam phone call and looked up the number. Google AI claims the number belongs to a police station, but the phone number appears nowhere on the linked page. Instead, actual search results all mention this being a scam.
(Also decides to give a Dutch response while my phone is in English and most search results in French, but nevermind that).

Ahhh AI poisoning is going to be the next nigerian prince.
On the top-right you can report the result for being incorrect. Perhaps that reporting gets fed into the AI model and was used by the scammers to make it seem legit?
Or the scammers first made sure the phone number was associated with the police using prompt injections and only afterwards started using this as a part of making the scam seem legitimate. “Hey, we’re really the police, just look up our number on Google” Pretty smart
Since Google f’ed up a perfectly good search engine with AI, it is high time to switch to another search altogether. Personally I like Qwant, StartPage and Ecosia. In this order.
Did you pick up?
I’m wondering what the scam is about.
Yeah man call it.

Scammers spoof the number they are calling from. This means the number you see on your phone is not the real number they call from, it’s faked. So this number can belong to anyone.
How can prefix 04 be from a Brussels location? AI still has a loooong way to go. Yet, some base their life choices on whatever AI tells them 🤦♂️
Technisch niet echt hallucineren maar gewoon foute brondata.
Google ai is the worst of all the ones I tried so far
This is why I’ll just google search the official website and ignore all that AI crap on top of the page. It’s completely untrustworthy, can’t do anything with a high enough success rate except the simplest tasks like write me a response based on this prompt and then you still have to double check.
Je bent al medeplichtig -en een idioot- als je die rommel zelfs maar gebruikt.
Lees eens een boek over hoe je verneukt wordt. “Enshittification_ Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to do about it” van Cory Doctorow is een goed begin.
This is why you just scroll past the AI bullshit. I don’t trust it if it does anything more than summarise a Wikipedia article
Elfendertigste voorbeeld van hoe brak AI in feite is.
I do not understand why shit like this isn’t consumer fraud or something. Local bussinesses can’t lie in their ads, but Google and other businesses can spew factually wrong bullshit all day with no restrictions.
