I’m confused by this triangle. As a pedestrian or cyclist, do I have to give way to oncoming traffic? If so, what’s the point in the zebra/pedestrian crossing markings?

Edit: This is in Vaasa btw.

  1. Here cyclist is required to give way, with or without the sign. The sign is there only to remind that.

In Finland cyclist gives way to cars on zebra crossings, unless otherwise stated by traffic sign (triangle or STOP for car) or the car turns to the zebra crossing.

  2. The triangle only applies to the cyclists. Pedestrians have the right of way as normal.

From this angle it looks like cyclists should yield even without the sign, but if there’s an intersection, which we can’t see from this angle, then the cyclists will have to yield to the turning traffic too because of the sign.

  3. As others have stated, these triangles (or sometimes stop-signs) only apply to cyclists, e-scooters and mopeds (basically anything that’s considered as a “vehicle”), not pedestrians.

By the looks of that crossing, you would anyways have to yield to the road traffic as a cyclist, so the triangle is basically there to remind you of that. Usually they put those on “light crossings” because the crossing in question is “extra hazardous”, ie. the view to the road is blocked until you’re very close to the crossing and/or your way leading to the crossing is inclined in a way that you could arrive at the crossing at ridiculously high speeds.

  4. Its not for Pedistrians but for other vehicles including Cyclists.

It simply means that the road on the Intersection has higher priority than yours.

  5. Where in Vaasa is this? Looks like a cozy path, I don’t recall ever seeing this place, but it’s probably because need to get out more often 😀

  6. The other side apparently has the same combination of the blue bike/pedestrian sign and the triangle.

To me this seems like a little out-of-standard city planning. I doubt that road signs can be applied for side walks. Anyway the give-way sign conflicts with the zebra stripe sign.
