‘This weekend’s gathering is an academic forum to present and discuss research that has been published on the so-called Métis in Ontario,’ Scott McLeod wrote in a letter
Dear Editor,
Re: “My father fought for our rights. Hate cannot undo the truth”
We at Robinson Huron Waawiindamaagewin (RHW) are responding to the letter submitted by Kim Powley calling our upcoming gathering a “Hate Rally.” Nothing can be further from the truth.
RHW is the organizing body for the 21 First Nations of the Robinson Huron Treaty of 1850. We are the original people of this land to which Gichi Manidoo has granted us Minigoziwin (inherent rights/sovereignty), Debendiziwin (the right to govern ourselves), Ndaakiimnaan (land) and Gichi Naakinagewin (our laws).
The rights and responsibilities given to us by Gichi Manidoo cannot be altered or taken away by any colonizers or foreign governments. We have always had our own governments, which are the only recognized and legitimate authorities with jurisdiction over Ndaakiimnaan. RHW has the responsibility to protect our territory, history, jurisdiction and to educate Treaty beneficiaries.
This weekend’s gathering “The (Un)Making of Métis Claims in Ontario,” is an academic forum to present and discuss research that has been published on the so-called Métis in Ontario. RHW is hoping to foster dialogue grounded in truth and respect.
This gathering invites elders, scholars, students and community members to explore the historical, political and legal foundations of the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) and its expanding claims across Anishinaabek territories.
It is troubling to us that when 20 independent scholars and community leaders gather to point out the flaws in the 2017 recognition of the MNO’s new communities, it could be labelled as a “hate rally.” The MNO – which receives tens of millions in funding every year – already has its mechanisms for promoting its research and findings.
We have created a forum that offers mostly Anishinaabe researchers an opportunity to share their research and findings.
We welcome anyone interested to join us in person or online. Registration information is available here: UnMaking of Métis Forum.
