Antonio Costa says Europe cannot accept US ‘threat to interfere’ • FRANCE 24 English

Europe cannot accept the threat of US interference in its politics. That’s according to top EU official Antonio Costa, who on Monday hit out at Washington’s recent ideological criticism of the block’s trajectory. The United States cannot replace European citizens in choosing which parties are good and which are bad. His words come just days after the US released its new national security strategy in which the current administration expressed disdain for the European Union and other transnational bodies, saying they undermine political liberty and sovereignty, migration policies that are transforming the continent and creating strife. The document also indicated support for the rise of far-right politicians in Europe, saying explicitly that the growing influence of patriotic European parties indeed gives cause for great optimism. Some members of the block such as foreign policy chief Kaya Carlos have sought to play down the criticism. And you know, US is still still our biggest ally. And there I I read it as well that we are still the biggest ally. While others such as Polish President Donald Tusk tried to remind the US that they share common enemies and that Europe is their closest ally, not their problem. Regardless, it is now enshrined into US policy, Washington’s intent to pull back its support for Europe, and that it also wants to see the NATO alliance stop perpetually expanding. It’s a win for Moscow. The nuance we see in the new concept certainly appeals to us. It speaks of the need for dialogue and building constructive good relations. This is certainly appealing and it’s entirely consistent with our vision. Another notable point that will have Europe on edge and Moscow satisfied is that the strategy does not cast Russia as a threat to the United States.

European Council president Antonio Costa on Monday rejected any attempt by the United States to meddle in Europe’s politics, after Washington published a new security strategy sharply criticising the continent’s policies. “What we cannot accept is the threat to interfere in European politics,” Costa told a conference in Brussels.

  11. In the US we are really starting to see Europe as ALL talk and limited or no ACTION. It has been 11 years since Russia invaded Crimea but Europe still spending billions on Russian oil & gas and still cannot figure out how to use frozen Russian assets to give Ukraine the financial help they really need. All of it inexusable.

I think if the U.S. starts to try to interfere in EU politics, for example, through orchestrated social media campaigns, the EU should exercise its power under the treaties to ban services being provided within the EU from third countries and prevent the U.S. social media platforms from operating on devices within the EU. I would prefer that than have to watch Europe destroy itself because of orchestrated propaganda campaigns launched by the fascists in the Zeus.

  23. The Deep State trying hard to keep power while Trump is working to get the people the right to choose. The EU is falling behind and they need to get back to their old form, when they were leaders in the world. Now they fly to China, get lectured, and sent home early.

  27. Two things can be true. The reality is that neither the US nor EU have the same interests going forward. The EU isn’t Russophobic enough to put boots on the ground, increase defence spending, or support Ukraine, Moldova, or Georgia the way they should. The US is controlled by Putin as of this current administration. Americans do not wish to help Europe defend itself when Europe doesn’t want to defend itself. The US is not trustworthy.

  30. Europe needs to enter into the 21st century. The EU decided not to invest in anything digital, no social media no search engines, no AI. Everything European citizens see is controlled by algorithms which are American. The tech companies had no problem shadow banning American citizens and you think they will have any compunction about Europeans? You are dreaming. They could effect any election just by controlling who sees what. And no one will ever know. For Europeans to be sure that the Americans are not affecting their elections they would have to block all social media. Good luck with that. This is what European leaders have done.

  34. If Europe is "vital" to the US, than the US will make sure the EU doesn't stray away from what US sees as acceptable. This is a price the EU has to pay for being under the "sphere of influence" of the US for the sake of free healthcare and free education. It is common knowlede that the US is pulling the strings in the EU. If EU goes bust, so does the US, so unfortunately for the EU, they can't go bust.
