EU reacts to US security strategy document saying Europe face ‘civilisational erasure’ • FRANCE 24

European leaders are choosing calm over confrontation. Even as the US strategy paper delivers one of the sharpest critiques of the EU in years, most officials seem intent on keeping tensions with Washington contained. The block’s top diplomats even downplaying some of the criticism. Europe has been underestimating its own power towards Russia, for example. I mean, we should be more self-confident. That’s that’s for sure. And uh you know US is still uh still our biggest ally. And there I I read it as well that we are still the biggest ally. And in Germany the response was slightly firmer. The country’s foreign minister making it clear he didn’t need external input on policy. Of course our alliance is based on shared values. But I believe that issues such as freedom of expression or the organization of free societies here, at least in Germany, do not belong in this context. Nor do we believe that anyone needs to give us advice on these matters. But no prominent leaders have slammed Trump for the scathing 33page document that accuses European countries of a so-called civilizational erasia. Preserving the transatlantic alliance appears to be top priority and most likely fear hitting back won’t play in their favor. Analysts say the lack of outcry comes down to the fact that these criticisms aren’t new. Vice President JD Vance delivered a blistering attack on European governments in Munich earlier this year. Their impact will be tested as crucial elections loom across the continent.

Reactions across Europe have been muted after the publication of the Trump administration’s national security strategy paper. It calls for European nations to take responsibility for their own defense, accuses the union of stifling political liberty, and says it’s experiencing civilisational erasure. And though it’s the most formal hostile critique of the bloc, EU leaders aren’t biting just yet. Story by Camille Knight.

  5. Believe me the Republican West has no shared values with the EU , Canada , California or with the Democrat voters . What the EU should do is listen carefully to Trump and elect EU leaders that align with Trump . Same goes for Canada . However , as we all know , California is a lost cause .

  9. If we imply the same tarifs at 25% for the EU -> US, they would lose about 80 billion in revenue.

    If the EU stopped buying US weapons, they lose about 10 billion.

    So, please go ahead mister Trump, go force your own people into more debt and higher taxes🎉

  14. The irony is that US brags about potential outcomes before achieving an actionable foothold. They also claim other's output as theirs. They create problems to pretend to solve them. Eisenhower and WW2 era leaders made US powerful. Subsequent leaders have lived off that.

  15. FYI: European banks and pension funds are exposed to bundled U.S. commercial real-estate debt — the same structured products that devastated Europe in 2008. The danger isn’t just failing office buildings. It’s that these debts are packaged, sliced, and sold in ways that hide where the real risk sits, and Europe once again holds the riskiest tranches – not the safe ones.

    U.S. office values are collapsing, vacancies are extreme, and a major wave of loan maturities is approaching. When these bundles start defaulting, the losses won’t hit American banks first. The toxic layers were offloaded onto European banks, insurers, and pension funds during years of low EU interest rates — the exact pattern that preceded the last crisis.

    The U.S. can absorb financial failures. Europe cannot. America has the FDIC, the Federal Reserve, and a unified system that can bury bad debt quickly. Europe has none of these buffers. One major institution forced to recognize losses on these bundles can trigger a wider crisis because the EU still lacks strong financial firewalls. That’s why some European countries never fully recovered from 2008 : the assets that wrecked them weren’t even European.

    Unless EU institutions start reducing exposure now, they will absorb the impact of the next U.S. real-estate collapse — again — because the danger is already embedded inside the bundled products they were sold.

  22. As a Canadian I was curious as to what Europe thought of this document. As Canadians being told US will control all of North America and we wouldn't be allowed to trade with any countries other than the US, and our resources will go to them, made me laugh.
    He's been threatening us since he came into power so it's just another day here in Canada. He wants us, come and try to take us.

    But I was curious as to how Europe would take being threatened by the US. I know it's new for you.

  27. Europe is done. The US bailed Europe out of two world wars only to have Europe and Britain surrender to the Greater European Muslim Califate and anti free speech socialists.

  30. Europe describes itself as a community of democracies, but many of its states have colonial histories, and some newer Eastern European members maintain political influences rooted in socialism. So it’s not exactly a very inspiring group of characters for aspiring democracies.
