  1. > Riders spotted the dog running off its leash on the sand as they took their initial canter, his lawyers say.

    > Then as they set off for their second ride, Max began running towards the group from behind while barking.

So they knew the dog was around but took the risk anyway

  2. So it’s a beach where dogs are allowed to run freely, the dog didn’t attack anything just ran up to the horse and the horse potentially tried to jump over it and threw the guy.

The company say all horses are fine with dogs and they don’t accept liability because dogs run around their stables all the time. This just seems like a tragic accident and this man, who I have full sympathy for, is trying to find someone to blame. Suing a man with a 14 year old dog for a ridiculous amount of money feels more vindictive than justified.

  3. Why won’t the company pay up? Won’t it be their insurance unless they don’t have one?

  4. Sounds harsh but seems it’s a bit of his own fault. Horses can be scared of their own shadows and throw you off.
That said why would you let your dog run up to and under a horse ? That’s a disaster waiting to happen.

  5. Horses are not toys. They are dangerous. Despite how uncommon they are they cause a lot of deaths for riders and a lot of horses die every year on our roads.

We need to restrict where horses can be and who can be on them and own them.

  6. If only there were countless examples of horses doing this to warn people about the risks. Hmmmmmmmmm.

I should buy a chimp and sue the zoo when it inevitably rips my face off

  7. Frankly if you ride on a horse you should know the risk and take responsibility. Everyone knows they are dangerous or at least you should.

  8. Unfortunate accident. I am guessing that “yes”, he had the right to ride his large dangerous animal in public. He also has the right to shoulder the consequences of doing so, though, including his own misfortune.

If it was a child that had ran up behind the horse, and the horse reacted, then we would be reading a different story – about manslaughter.

  9. So is it the horse or the dog to blame? Are horses meant to be trained to avoid such common perils or is it just a tragic accident and no cout should be busied with it?

  10. He is 100% well within his rights to sue. You can allow your pet to roam freely if you want but you have to pay for the consequences

  11. Reading the comments in this thread, now I understand why our government evacuated dogs out of Afghanistan before they evacuated people

I love the UK but it is utterly warped and deranged when it comes to some topics

Another point is the deeply servile nature of most British subjects which is deeply ingrained in the society and culture- where if something bad happens to you and you become disabled the socially acceptable attitude is to shrug your soldiers and say ‘oh well shit happens’. And anybody who seeks recompense for their injuries are vilified and demonised.

This attitude is reinforced by the press who commonly run anti-litigation news stories

And have you ever asked the question why conservative newspapers like The Times, Telegragh and The Sun run anti-litigation stories?

  12. Sometimes shit happens and no-one is really to blame. I guess that’s hard to accept when it’s had such devastating consequences

  13. Horses are some of the dumbest animals around, everyone getting onto one should know what a potentially stupid idea it is.
