Seán Moncrieff: We’re raising our daughter in the long tradition of Irish Catholic hypocrisy

  1. This circles back around to the point that all publicly funded schools should be entirely non religious in nature. Any religious instruction should be done in your own time alongside your imam/rabbi/priest/druid/monk of your choice.

For historical reasons that isn’t the case in Ireland but it ought to be striven for. Despite its many, many flaws the aim of public education to be entirely secular in the US is actually something I admire. I know it’s very much a case by where you are and some more conservative US states have allowed Christianity to enter their public schools under the guise of ‘teaching all viewpoints’ and you could argue that the US is pushing religion with the ‘one nation under god’ stuff but on the whole, it’s something I think is a good aspiration.

Also, I think Moncrieff hit on an interesting point regarding those who abandon Catholicism in Ireland for atheism or agnosticism. A lot of people in Ireland seem to think if the Catholic Church had female priests and allowed gay marriage and supported abortion etc. that the masses would flood back (pun not intended actually..). However, if you simply don’t believe in the Catholic version of God and religion it won’t matter how the organisation behaves. The Church of England is much more ‘liberal’ than Catholicism and is still seeing it’s numbers plummet.

  2. A lot of these issues could be solved if people stopped putting ‘Catholic’ down on the census form to allow for a clearer picture of how society actually is now

Edit: I should have said, obviously if you have religion and you do feel a member of the Catholic faith that is fine. You do you. But if you only go at Christmas to keep the parents/grandparents happy then it’s time to maybe faceup to how you actually feel about religion

  3. Catholic schools are irritating. Ya try bring up a child with as little superstitious bullshit pushed on them as possible and then there are no secular schools in your area. Then when the other children are busy doing the religious stuff in school they feel left out and ask why they don’t do it too. The answer to that is, of course “You can join in if you like. Some people just don’t believe in the same things.” Fuck sake 🤣

  4. It’s nauseating that this massive cult still has a presence in modern life. There is no accounting for people and stupidity. It astonishes me that any sane person would allow their children next or near a Catholic church priest school cult ceremony. Crazy.

  5. I find Moncrieff’s view very strange. If I ever have children, I wouldn’t want them to go to a Catholic school – that’s not down to any particular hatred of the Catholic church. I wouldn’t want my hypothetical kids going to a Jewish or Muslim or protestant school either – simply because it doesn’t align with my own beliefs and I think it would be really strange for my child to learn prayers & religious stories which I don’t prescribe to. Also, I have a strong belief that religion has no place in education and that our schools should be secular & inclusive of all denominations or none.
It seems like this ‘indifferent’ standpoint is really holding us back from achieving secular education.
