EU leader warns of US interference in Europe’s affairs as Russia praises Trump’s security vision

Analysts and current and former officials in Europe have pushed back against new White House security strategy that calls for asserting US dominance in the Western Hemisphere. In extraordinary language for addressing close allies, the strategy said the administration would be cultivating resistance to Europe’s current trajectory within European nations. As Donald Trump seeks an end to the Ukraine war that would likely favor Russia gaining territory, the strategy accused Europeans of weakness and said Washington should focus on ending the perception and preventing the reality of NATO as a perpetually expanding alliance. Well, for more on this story, we can cross live to France 24’s Dave Keading, who’s in Brussels. Dave, we’ve seen Zilinski meeting with European allies then in London this Monday. uh the president actually saying that there needs to be unity between Europe, Ukraine and the United States. What implications could this strategy have then for efforts to end the war in Ukraine? Yeah, this strategy has really landed like a ton of bricks here in Brussels particularly on the question of Ukraine because the way people are reading it here is this is the US saying that Europe is an enemy and Russia is a friend. Uh specifically, the document says that European governments have quote unrealistic expectations about the war. In other words, European governments still think Ukraine can win the war and the United States now believes that the only outcome here is that Russia wins the war. Uh the document went on to suggest that the elitist governments of Europe aren’t listening to the people, that the majority of Europeans want Ukraine to accept that 28 point peace plan, a peace plan that most here in Brussels view as terms of surrender for Ukraine. Uh and it was really scathing about the sitting governments of Europe, uh but really had only nice things or neutral things to say about Russia. In fact, the the document mentions Europe 50 times, more than any other area of the world. China, for instance, is only mentioned 23 times. So, this has really rattled people here. I think it’s not that different actually from a a statement that came out from the State Department back in May talking about this civilizational conflict and uh Centra’s governments uh not being very good. Uh but people really have not wanted to hear what the US is saying. It is hard to ignore, however, when it is in a national security strategy. And tell us more, Dave, about the kinds of reactions that this doctrine has sparked in Europe. Yeah, people behind the scenes, let’s say journalists, think tank people are absolutely apoplelectic about this. Uh, it’s really really shocked people here. Like I say, a lot of people have not really wanted to engage or listen to some of the really scary things that the Trump administration has been saying about Europe. Now they have no choice. Uh but however, the leaders of Europe have been pretty quiet about this the same way they have been this entire year whenever the Trump administration says these types of things about Europe. The European Commission President Ursula Fondonderion has been completely silent. The Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk yesterday uh put a statement on X uh asking if the transatlantic alliance had changed. Seems like it has, I think. Uh but it was a very very lackluster response from all European leaders. We did however today have a statement from Antonio Costa. He was speaking at a think tank event in Paris and he was asked about the new national security strategy. He said it would be unacceptable for the United States to be interfering in the politics of Europe and that it is for European citizens to decide who are the good parties and who are the bad parties in elections. And he’s of course referring to the fact that the national security strategy is identifying for support what they call patriotic parties, what are really far-right nationalist parties uh in Europe that are challenging the sitting centrist governments. uh that his message there is that it’s unacceptable for the US to be kind of pursuing regime change by supporting these far-right opposition parties and trying to hurt the sitting centrist parties. Nevertheless, we still didn’t get a whole lot of reaction yet publicly. Behind the scenes, though, this has really really rattled Europeans. All right, Dave Kitting, thank you very much for that update from Brussels.

European Council President António Costa on Monday warned the United States against interfering in Europe’s affairs and said only European citizens can decide which parties should govern them. The remarks came in reaction to the Trump administration’s new national security strategy, which was published on Friday and paints European allies as weak, while offering tacit support to far-right political parties. FRANCE 24’s Dave Keating reports from Brussels.

  1. US interference in Europe? Europe has always danced at the whims of Washington just that now you don't like who's in charge there don't act like it's something new

  2. Its time mercenaries are tasked with taking out the world's political dictators. Offer tremendous amounts of money for the task at hand and be patient. Things will get done.

  3. To be fair, the EU is led by unelected officials and has never allowed a third party audit. There is also the case of v.d. Leyen and the case with the Pfizer contract to her husband. No smoke without fire, I say.

  4. Trump should do well if he decides to pull out US support from Ukraine bcs it's the only way that would end. Let EU leaders decide what to do in order to meet their peace plan demands, by themselves.😢

  5. Well then, how about the US stops interfering in Europe's affairs starting with leaving NATO😂 Doubt there will be any Europe left.

  6. even the EU interfere in the US politics and economy so whats new ?the EU really weakened the securities of europe..the EU does not have teeth but only false promises..uckraine s biggest error is to trust the EU ,the uckraine taught the EU can manupulate the US..

  8. Never thought i would think trump is going to be the only one who can save europe. Our identity is GONE.

  9. The EU still believes in a cleaner, fairer world for 8.8 billion people — but too many people have stopped thinking for themselves and fall for populists who only care about power and profit. Climate change is real, inequality is exploding, and a handful of billionaires are turning the world into their own playground while using AI and social platforms to manipulate public opinion like in a dystopian movie. The tragedy is that AI, which could liberate humanity, is owned and controlled by the same people who created this mess. If we don’t wake up soon, society will reset itself — and let’s hope it won’t be through a global conflict.

  10. Eu has been sleeping for so long
    I can tell you that
They were too comfy until the year 2023-2025 hit them hard they need to wake up like seriously.
All they do is talk where is the action???

  11. I don’t get the issue with Trump trying to get a peace deal. Zelenskyy can say no it’s just Putin isn’t going to stop unless he wins something in this conflict

  12. You people were founded after multiple times of mauling each other to death and the united states scraped you off the floor and this is the thanks we get ? A totalitarian communist bent jack boot organization of sell out aristocrats ? You sold out wholesale the whole continent of Europe but we are the bad guys ?

  13. Nothing new as it was very clear where the US was heading, but hopefully this will be the point Europe finally realizes it needs to distance from the US and grow a spine. And it needs unity for that, not fear.

  14. I wouldn’t want trump on my bad side. Remember bombing the drug cartel ship a bit ago? No one saw that coming…if he says it he will do it. Always has always will. Has kept his campaign promises. One word. Boom.

  15. When you have to install barricades to protect your Christmas markets from attacks within your own countries then you have a problem. This is exactly what Trump and Vance are trying to convey but it looks like some Europeans don't want to admit it.
