Zelensky faces a bitter choice: take on Trump – or betray his own people

  1. It is almost one month since Russia’s military chief Valery Gerasimov declared his forces had captured the town of Kupiansk, sitting in [Kharkiv](https://inews.co.uk/topic/kharkiv?srsltid=AfmBOorDSUUHRTz9CUAJEv8wvihLDkTAJQ-iLYEX3NH4-vJ8L_cKT5Cf&ico=in-line_link) region 25 miles from the border. The general’s claim was echoed at start of this month by his despotic boss, [Vladimir Putin](https://inews.co.uk/topic/vladimir-putin?ico=in-line_link), who invited journalists to witness their triumph. On Friday, [Volodymyr Zelensky](https://inews.co.uk/topic/volodymyr-zelensky?ico=in-line_link) made the perfect riposte: standing in his flak jacket in front of the bullet-ridden blue and yellow sign at the city entrance. “The reality speaks for itself,” he said defiantly.

Zelensky was – according to open source intelligence – roughly 1,000 yards from Russian positions. It was a brilliant move, reminding the world of his bravery at the start of the [full-scale invasion](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/russia-when-invade-ukraine-2022-why-putin-started-war-timeline-conflict-2160097?ico=in-line_link) when he refused to leave Kyiv despite Kremlin death squads hunting for him.

Since then, he has made regular trips to see troops in bunkers and trenches on the front line. This is a striking contrast to the two cowardly blowhards trying to cook up a “peace” deal to carve up Ukraine and enrich cronies. Putin has never been seen in the combat zone to witness his own war crimes, while neither [Donald Trump](https://inews.co.uk/topic/donald-trump?ico=in-line_link) (nor %5Bhis peace envoy Steve Witkoff](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/trump-peace-envoy-britain-europe-deal-russia-4079152?ico=in-line_link)) have dared visit [Ukraine](https://inews.co.uk/topic/ukraine?ico=in-line_link).

Like any politician, the Ukrainian leader has flaws – seen with [a corruption scandal that drove out his chief of staff](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/ukraines-latest-scandal-raising-stakes-dangerous-moment-war-4040924?ico=in-line_link) – but no one can doubt his courage. Yet even his nerves of steel must be tested by his current plight. For he finds himself snared between a White House that despises Europe and is working with the Kremlin to tear off chunks of his country – and his own people who remain resolute in their resistance to invading barbarians, despite deep weariness after so long battling a much larger enemy.

I have just returned from my latest visit to Ukraine. People are tired and stressed – from the rising death toll of friends and relatives, from long nights under intensifying attacks by drones and missiles, from the economic carnage caused by Putin’s war. Yet I was struck by how this resilient society has adjusted to power cuts caused by attacks on infrastructure, which can last 16 hours a day in the capital. And that not one person I met sanctioned the idea of handing over any land still in their hands in exchange for ceasefire, [a resolute stance backed by latest polling](https://neweurope.org.ua/en/analytics/en-foreign-policy-and-security-opinions-of-ukrainian-society-2025-part-1/) and widespread belief that it will only be an interregnum in Moscow’s imperialist war.

  2. Let Dorito Satan talk you out of protecting your country or be the hero the world needs… Hard choice.  I know he’ll do the right thing, he’s an actual leader.

  3. I’ve said it a thousand times, it doesn’t matter what Zelenskyy does, Ukrainians will keep fighting, it will just be as militias and insurgents instead of organized UA forces.

  4. He just needs to string traitor trump along the way putin does.

  5. No concessions. Take on Trump.

The Ukrainians deserve better. They are standing for the entire world.

  6. I honestly don’t know why Ukraine hasn’t removed Trump already.

  7. Never betray your people! Orange pedoman will change his mind anyway, after his next dementia strike kicks in next week.

  8. Don’t back down President Zelensky, as everyone including my cat knows…..Trump Always Chickens Out (TACO)

  9. The front lines of this war are not only the live fire zones where Zelensky stands. They are not only in Ukraine. There are other fronts, all over the world, where the Russian invasion takes a political form rather than military. But to the Kremlin these fronts are no less a part of the war. In fact a crucial part of the war, since they now know that they cannot defeat Ukraine on the battlefield. They must defeat Ukraine elsewhere.

Those are fights that Ukrainians cannot fight. But there is someone else who can. Wherever you are, your country is under bombardment by Russia to drive it away from Ukraine. You can stop that. You can’t stop it alone, any more than Zelensky can stop the invasion alone. But you won’t be alone.

Putin believes, as his many supporters and sympathizers around the world believe, that only a few people actually matter. People who are rich and powerful, who can, should, and must always get their way, all the time, every time. And no one else aside from those people have any say in anything. The job of all other people is just to follow obediently and do what they are told.

Thus they still do not understand how Russia has not won the war on the ground in Ukraine. They literally cannot comprehend it. The rich powerful man has spoken…. why has it not become so? They don’t believe that regular people in large numbers can defy wealth and power and determine the course of events for themselves.

Ukraine proves them wrong every day. And so can we. Takeover by Kremlin-backed fascists is not inevitable, it is not unstoppable, and it is not final, no matter how much they may desperately claim otherwise. Just as they claim to hold Pokrovsk and Kupiansk even as Zelensky stands there defiantly. They must, because otherwise the illusion of their inevitability breaks.

And we aim to break it.

  10. At this point I’m sure it’s Vance or Flynn behind the anti Ukraine stuff. His dementia is getting bad enough I don’t think he runs anything. I’m sure Melania and kushner are puppeting the business, Vance, Rubio and Miller the domestic and foreign issues.

  11. Trump is a capricious narcissist who is in Putin’s back pocket. He has stabbed Ukraine in the back and has now decided that Europe is his enemy.

The whole thing means that Ukrainians will suffer . Absolutely disgusting behaviour from the idiot man-child Trump

  12. Easy : mr. Trump leave office or die from old… Nation Ukrainians will live

  13. Not a hard choice if you know … is a russian asset….

  14. Always choose integrity , then noone can accuse you of anything duplicitous.

Leave the lying to the sex offenders.

  15. That’s a completely false premise. There is no choice. Trump has almost zero leverage. The US has already ceased to provide anything but a small amount of intelligence support (of little value now), and the US isn’t offering any credible security guarantees either. So just ignore Trump and the US. Just doing the ignoring in a polite way so as to avoid giving Trump any excuses he can give to republicans to justify normalizing relations with Russia.

The fact that a majority of republicans support Ukraine is the one check on Trump that still remains. Trump has to tread carefully with his enthusiasm for an outright Russian alliance since doing so would lose at least a few congress men and women, which is very bad in such a closely divided government.
