“The situation in Seyðisfjörður is manageable,” says Jón Kristinn Helgason, head of landslide and hazard assessment at the Icelandic Meteorological Office. He says it has helped that temperatures dropped on Saturday and that little to no precipitation has fallen since Friday evening.

“In the old landslide scar from December 2020, the terrain is very steep and contains a large amount of loose material. When we observed movement there last week, we decided to monitor the area closely and advise people to avoid travelling near the landslide scar on Búðarhryggur,” he says.

“Groundwater levels have dropped, although they remain high in most boreholes,” Jón Kristinn adds, noting that minor movement can still be detected on the ridge and at the deformation gauge in Þófinn. However, it can be expected that the movements will gradually decrease.
