It’s a claim Donald Trump has made on more than one occasion, including on Friday when he was named the first winner of the newly created FIFA Peace Prize. The US president has claimed he ended six, then seven, and now eight wars, some of which, by his own admission, never even started. In particular, he claims to have prevented another war between Kosovo and Serbia, who have not been involved in a full-blown conflict since 1999. The same goes for the tensions between Egypt and Ethiopia over a dam on the River Nile. Ethiopian officials said Trump’s words risked inflaming tensions. Egypt is not going to be able to live that way, and they’ll end up blowing up the dam. And I said it, and I say it loud and clear, they’ll blow up that dam. In October, Trump oversaw a peace agreement signed in Malaysia between Thailand and Cambodia, which fought a 5-day border conflict in July that claimed dozens of lives. An opportunity to praise himself once again. I shouldn’t say it’s a hobby because it’s so much more serious than a hobby, but it’s something that I’m good at and it’s something I I love to do. The resumption of fighting between the two countries since Sunday cast doubt on Trump’s claims of being an effective peacemaker. Disappointment has been even quicker in central Africa after the signing of a peace agreement between the DRC and Rwanda in Washington last week. Rwanda backed M23 rebels have continued to clash with the Congolese army, each side blaming the other. [Music] The very day after the signing of the agreement, units of the Rwanda Defense Forces led and supported attacks with heavy weapons. The leaders of Armenia and Azabaijan said Trump should receive credit for securing a peace deal between the two in August. In May, Trump claimed credit for the ceasefire between India and Pakistan after a brief flare up in long-running tensions, but India played down the talk of US involvement. Israel, meanwhile, has praised the US president’s peacemaking efforts. Trump’s plan enabled them to recover most of their hostages held in Gaza. But since the ceasefire was agreed to in October, there have been flare-ups of violence, including Israeli strikes on Gaza. The US also helped Israel to weaken Iran by conducting strikes against Thran’s nuclear program before the White House mediated a ceasefire. Though he’s made no secret of his desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize, the committee did not select Trump for the accolade this time round.

Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed to have ended or prevented up to eight wars, but many analysts and experts dispute these assertions, noting that some of the conflicts never existed or have since resumed. While he has been involved in several diplomatic agreements, continuing violence and scepticism from those directly affected cast doubt on his effectiveness as a peacemaker. Despite his ambition for a Nobel Peace Prize, his latest claims have again been challenged.
