On November 27, Queen Margrethe of Denmark joined the cast of this year’s Christmas ballet, The Snow Queen, on stage at the Tivoli’s Concert Hall. Margrethe, who is a noted artist, designed both the sets and the costumes for this year’s production of the ballet. She is pictured here with the dancers and the company’s artistic director, Peter Bo Bendixen. Margrethe has been involved with the production of Tivoli’s Christmas ballet for years, and they’ve already announced that she will design sets and costumes for next year’s ballet, The Nutcracker.

A press release from Tivoli shares more about the ballet itself: “The Christmas ballet The Snow Queen is based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale of the same name and is being restaged in the year marking the 220th anniversary of his birth and the 150th anniversary of his death. Many also know the Snow Queen story from Disney’s film Frozen. The production is a tribute to the Danish fairytale author, who also wrote stories such as The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling.”

“A total of 36 professional ballet dancers from Tivoli Ballet Theatre, representing 11 different countries including Italy, France, the USA, Canada, Mexico, and Ukraine, take part in the production,” the press information explains. “Musicians from Tivoli Copenhagen Phil performed in the orchestra pit under the direction of conductor Adi Zukanovic.” The ballet was choreographed by Yuri Possokhov to a score written by the musician Oh Land.

For her big moment at the ballet, Queen Margrethe wore a red and black ensemble: a black velvet coat with lace panels (from Christian Lacroix) and a striped skirt.

Margrethe’s jewels continued the color and pattern themes. She wore earrings with double négligé-style pendants, each of which is tipped with a bright red bead. (Enamel? Coral?) She also wore the special brooch made for her in 2022 by Georg Jensen to celebrate her Golden Jubilee. The look was completed, as always, by her enormous diamond toi et moi engagement ring.

Several family members and friends were also on hand to celebrate Margrethe’s ballet designs. Here, her younger sister, Princess Benedikte, greets Tivoli CEO Susanne Mørch Koch. Looking on is Margrethe’s eldest grandchild, Count Nikolai of Monpezat, son of Prince Joachim and Countess Alexandra.

One of Margrethe’s good friends, Queen Sonja of Norway, was also on hand for the ballet performance. She often makes the quick trip over to Copenhagen during the season to support Margrethe at Tivoli.

The good people at Tivoli have also shared a YouTube video featuring the arrivals of the royals and footage from the performance. Enjoy!
