Elgin bought the marbles because they were going to be destroyed. If the Greeks wanted them they should have preserved them. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

As a British Asian, im telling you, sometimes the British Museum was absolutely right to take it. The turmoil abroad is far too much. I reckon half of the exhibits would be smashed to bits if left in situ.
So many countries today are so undeserving of their rich heritage and cultural past.

The BM has done amazing stuff for preserving Historical Artefacts, but i feel like they do go overboard sometimes,
though this isin’t the biggest example of an entire temple being relocated to another country *cough cough Pergamum Museum*
Yeah I think we’re on the clear on this. Show me the locals who looked after their history better than we did, and I’ll back down!
i honestly don’t get the hate that the british museum receives, it just seems like emotionally driven nuance lacking white knighting. they’re there to preserve them, and it’s probably the best place they could be. and the reason why they’re there is because the british were among the first to actually care about preservation of artifacts. it’s not like the british museum is going around chipping pieces off the rosetta stone to sell in their gift shop, they’re pretty goddamn protected

Wish they took more stuff to be honest.
Technically you could argue that we ruled quite a few of the countries that we took artefacts from when we took them.
Not that it makes it any more morally correct. Probably worse to be honest.
