We currently have a massive problem in our building. Someone is breaking every night 2 more locks. The housing company knows of this and just says, we should not have anything expensive in our lockers and make pictures of our cellars and make a list of everything that is there. Now, in the block where I live, we all live in tiny apartments, so the cellar is the only storage to get the other stuff there. How can I make it more safe?

  1. Legal:
Take picture, take list of anything valuable. List that where missing. Take these details with photos to insurance.

Unlegal: Wait for the rat with basebat.

  2. Here’s the fun part, you can’t… Sorry for your situation, but it will not end until the one bad egg has left the building for good 😕

We got electric keys so the system would have logins where the housing company could check who has been going down there. Well, the thieves/thief broke in to the storage room facility with crowbar lol. So yeah, nobody keeps anything worth value there anymore, old sport gear etc only. Now the locks have been untouched for a few years now. _knocking wood_

One can always sleep on storage, maybe the thieves would leave your unit alone then. Just kidding. Do not sleep in there, please and thank you. Hope you get this solved quickly mate.

    Edit: wording

  3. A pepper spray springwire trap would be nice. Also some kind of footprint tape or paper on the floor would be nice add-on to the trap I would put for the unexpected visitor.

I guess there’s no other way than change the locks to some tracking electric ones.

Edit: Oh, and btw storing your car tires in the cellar is forbidden in most buildings (see pic 1).

  4. Hmm i have one idea but there is no real product for it and will require some dyi. Instead of the latch petruding out, saw a lock sized circle half on the door and half on the frame then take two metal plates and screw them in the inside side of the storage and measure and drill holes for the lock to go in so that way the lock is kind of embedded in the door so no one cant cut the latch open and will probably just cut a hole in the chicken wire door lmao

  5. It’s made of wood and staples: so nothing legal can help you there.

BTW. look thru your apartment rules, might be forbidden to store tires because of load in case of fire.

  6. Well surveillance cameras should be installed in a place like that. Move out of that dump.

  7. Probably the only thing you can actually do is to try to disguise it to look like it’s just full of worthless crap. Even if you buy bigger and stronger locking hardware, a crowbar will easily make it through the door itself. Building traps will get you into legal trouble so maybe don’t try that either.

  8. These wooden lockers won’t hold anybody serious, but maybe reinforce them with (film) plywood, replace hinges and locking mechanism with heavy duty ones. After that the thief needs power tools, not a pocket knife.

  9. Apart from the video surveillance or door/walls reinforcements, everything else that comes to our hivemind is, probably, illegal in Finland. And I’m not even sure about the former…

  10. Can you do a one of those bike lock chains around the wood panels? Or preferably even two. That’s what we use.

  11. Put hunting camera inside facing door. Atleast u see which junkie u should beat up.

  12. Get yourself battery powered game/wild nature camera with sim card option from Biltema or from Reolink. You should get notifications in your phone the moment someone’s near your door. You just need to find a proper placement and distance.

Then let Lucille talk with that undesirable filth and social nuisance.

These storage facility should be cages, not these shitty wooden compartments.

  13. You can’t. Those places get broken into all the time

  14. Hidden camera, its your neighbor anyway, then you know whos doing it.

Or if you have plenty of time, go hide in the locker until burgular comes.

  15. Doesn’t sound like you reported this to the Police. How about you start there, and do  so every time someone breaks in again.

    Most likely it’s a neighbour.

  16. Those little cabinets are worthless in terms of security. I wouldn’t store anything in them worth any amount of money. Most recently my friend had his wine and liquor stolen…I told him that was probably the dumbest thing to keep in one of those. Fact is you can see there is no security there just from your pictures…that lock is just a formality. So not much you can actually do except control how much they can steal. Sorry.

  17. I put wildlife camera inside mine. There are ones with a free internet connection with limited photos per month (100pcs). When there’s movement inside the closet, camera will take photos and send them to phone with an alarm. It’s important to align the camera so that it will only take photos inside your closet, otherwise it’s illegal. Also, if you can’t prevent the incident when it’s happening, thieves will most probably steal the camera as well.
