I’ve drank garden shed poitín and I’m still alive, I’m sure you’ll be fine.
Most likely it’s just infused Vodka – I’m sure it’s very nice and it’s a generous gift. Most the decent things in the world were created by individuals. Got to be worth giving some things a shot (pardon the pun)
Methanol at one end and acetone at the other. Let’s party!
Ignore all the licensing police. My Polish neighbour gave me home made vodka and it induced literal visual hallucinations when I drank it with my brother in law. Enjoy your gin bet it’s good.
Why did we stop putting computer generated lightning on drink?
Lynx set?
Obviously update us with the results please
So many boring sods on here talking about legalities and not wanting to die horribly by drinking unknown chemicals given to you by a colleague.
I’d be chuffed if someone gave me this. I’d much rather have something homemade as opposed to shop bought.
Nice! I’ll have it if you dont want it!
If he’s eastern European or Eastern European adjacent, I’d trust it. I’m from Romania and homemade spirits and wine are a big thing, and people are aware of how to distill and take the head out to avoid methanol poisoning etc. Had no idea that it’s illegal in the UK (not that I’d try it, lol)
This is a very nice gift. If he made that from scratch then hours of work have gone into it
I had local poitín at my wedding in Ireland. It was great fun!!
Looks like a posh knock off of white lightning and I’m here for it, let us know how it goes! 😵💫
I’ve drank “hjemmebrent” in Norway a good few times, always been nicer than most commercial spirits. Get it fucking doon yi
PS – Hjemmebrent is Norwegian moonshine. Due to their previously really restrictive alcohol laws, there’s a really strong tradition of folk distilling their liquor themselves.
Fucking result! Make sure you get everyone shitfaced on Christmas Day and see who goes blind first.
I would be chuffed to be honest, it is more of a personal gift that some tat from the Boots gift aisle… I mean, if I worked with someone who made their own booze I would pay for some of it
This is a cool gift.
Chances are you’re absolutely fine since most gin makers simply purchase neutral spirit in bulk and then distill or mix it themselves with their botanical choices, and add water for bottling strength.
Methanol comes from fermentation generally, so a quality tested product bought and redistilled/steeped won’t have an issue with this.
Ask how he makes it. You might find that he doesn’t actually distill the alcohol himself.
Plenty of gin (most of the stuff you buy in the supermarket) is simply made using grain alcohol and adding the botanicals mix to it, and adding water to bring it down to 40% alcohol by volume.
My parents did a tour of the Plymouth Gin factory many years ago, and that’s how they did it.
Your colleague may well do the same thing. Grain alcohol is readily available, often sold as ‘grain neutral spirit’ or similar and is around 70% alcohol by volume.
Now that’s a special Secret Santa! I’m jealous
That’s class. My wife’s family is Greek and make their own Tsipouro. It is absolutely brutal stuff and singes your nose if you sniff it, but you’re a wank if you don’t at least have one.
Hell yeah. This is great.
The gimps are out in force as usual it seems. Enjoy the gin.
Not very secret
Stop drinking it when you see yourself sat on the sofa from a third person perspective
Ignore the fun police. I spent a few months last year in Bali drinking homemade Arak. We’d pick it up in tied up sandwich bags from a bloke who made it in his kitchen. Also drank homemade whiskey in a village on the Meling river in Laos and a ridiculous amount of rice wine in the mountains in North Vietnam. I’m sure you’ll be fine haha
I distill my own Spirits at home. I can still see.
What a lovely gift, enjoy!
I once attended a BBQ where an ex police officer who had just retired had started making his own moonshine. He gave it to my 85 year old grandmother and got her absolutely smashed off one bottle. Never before had I seen it take 4 grown adult males to carry a 4’11 woman from Bradford. Enjoy it.
Is it home made as in he did the distillation or did he just flavour the gin?
When you have drunk it. Ask if they want the bottle back. I make beer wine and cider. Bottles cost s lot so it’s nice to reuse them
People on here saying this is unsafe don’t know what gin is.
It’s juniper flavoured vodka. There are subcategories, but that’s it.
If you add juniper berries to vodka you can legally sell it as gin and legally state that you were the one who made it.
I’m not kidding.
Of course Redditors are having a conniption over this. Yes, you’re a sheltered hypochondriac, you’re very special.
I’ve seen DIY gin kits in home bargains where you have to add your own vodka.
