The UK is ramping up preparations to send a peacekeeping force to Ukraine, including buying up kit and finalising deployment plans, *The i Paper* understands.
Defence Secretary John Healey has said that the UK is “raising our readiness levels” to deploy British troops in the event of a deal, whose presence would be designed to deter further Russian attacks.
“I continue to direct funding to prepare our UK troops and Armed Forces so that we are ready to deploy when peace comes with troops on the ground and jets in the air,” he told a meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group.
There are “signals of a progress in the peace talks, which is further advanced than at any time during this war,” according to Healey.
The Ministry of Defence is currently examining its “notice to move” process – the period of time for a unit to be ready to deploy – and advancing plans on the locations where troops would deploy from and to, *The i Paper* understands.
It is also beginning the process of accelerating spending on equipment to keep troops safe, known as force protection, and on necessary kit.
The kit required will depend on the role of the force, as defined by any peace agreement, but could range from drone technology to electronic warfare equipment, vehicles and body armour.
