After ignoring Jewish pleas for help for the past two years, Western governments seem to be starting to pay attention a bit now, as Jewish blood is being spilled on their own streets.
This follows Jews being burned and shot in the United States, stabbed in Manchester in the UK, and gunned down in Australia, alongside thousands of other attacks over the past two years alone. All of it has been justified, encouraged and supported under the slogan “Anti-Zionism is not Anti-Semitism”
Will this finally be a wake-up call for some in Europe and the US? Will they begin listening to Jewish voices, who have already experienced so-called “Anti-Zionism” in both Eastern Europe and the Middle East, where it consistently led to pogroms, discrimination, and ultimately violent ethnic cleansing?
Banning calls for intifada, which was a violent campaign of most notably suicide bombings targeting Israeli civilians, is at least a start.
Everyone knows what this phrase means in this context. Yes, intifada means struggle or uprising in Arabic but in the context of this conflict it refers to violent waves of terror attacks against civilians Jews.
It would be like defending neo-Nazis because “mein kampf means just means my struggle in German”.
And on top of that, if you know a chant *is being interpreted* by lots of people as a call to murder Jews, you would choose a different slogan that won’t create that misunderstanding. You wouldn’t keep chanting it unless that’s what you actually mean.
Every politician or figure that has defended this or refused to enforce existing laws or rules regarding calls for violence is complicit in the rise of antisemitism over the past few years.
I’m not Jewish, but the Bondi shooting just broke something inside of me the other day and I just stared at the ceiling feeling completely defeated with no hope left in humanity.
This wave of antisemitism across the last year especially which has turned Jews into a globally hated pariah, both online and IRL in so called developed countries, feels like we’re living in some nightmare timeline where libel, 10th century style witchunting, and dehumanization has become mainstream. Massive chunks of the under-30 crowd in the western world + middle east don’t even consider Jews **human** anymore, they genuinely eat up complete libel and bizarre conspiracy theories which makes them think that Jews are some reptilian alien species out here to ruin civilization.
Even though its hard to openly support you due to inevitably being ostracized from society for doing so (as both the left and right ends of the political spectrum have true sociopathic disdain for Jews); me and, I hope, the silent majority of regular empathetic members of society will always stand by you.
The way how normalized, casual, and socially rewarded antisemitism has become in spaces that loudly claim moral superiority; when libel, conspiracy thinking, and collective blame get laundered through “activism,” memes, or academic language, they stop triggering people’s moral alarm bells. That’s how societies slide into something very dark without realizing it. I feel this is what’s happening to us.
