Universal basic income should be for everyone, maybe closer to €200 than €325, it’s bullshit you have to pretend to look for work if you’re unemployed and there shouldn’t be a disparity between different types of welfare.
I don’t have a problem with this. Of course some people will exploit this. But there are genuine artists who will benefit from this and give them breathing space to create things they want and not just things that will give them a quick buck. You hear stories of young bands breaking up cos they just can’t justify staying together. On top of that there are many forms of art that improve society but don’t make much money. In Dundalk there are massive murals popping up all over the town, and some are fantastic. Not sure how much they get paid for the work, but its something that the public can appreciate daily and there is no way for it to generate money on its own. You can’t put a price on it.
What would life be without art and creativity? This is great; look what patrons did throughout history, and the already high output of Ireland getting this kind of boost 👏
If I remember now, you must already be making money to actually apply for this? Or a % of your income has to be from art would be more accurate. I think this is almost backwards. The only people who would be making money anyway would be people who are
A) already successful
B) People who can afford to focus on their art to make 4/5k off it and not worry
Or have I misread it? I also think stuff like this will only benefit what’s in vogue. I don’t see any risktakers making money off this in terms of written art like a novel. I see more Sally Rooney’s coming out of this than a Beckett. I can also see bands taking the piss here by just doing cover songs and getting the money regardless. I feel this whole scheme is well meaning but badly implemented, especially for writers who will be forced to pigeonhole themselves in order to make money to actually apply for this and Normal People sells more than Molloy any day of the week. This isn’t new though I suppose, just look at the literary magazines in the country for an idea of the standard: same old stale and stagnant stuff, nothing radical is ever picked for Cyphers and the like. It was better when newspapers paid people a few pound to write stories for them, that’s how Joyce started and how Dostoevsky and Dickins made some money too. Crime and Punishment and Great Expectations being famous examples.
You know the meme of that guy in the yellow suit behind a tree wringing his hands… thats every weed dealer and offo owner right now
We should all have a universal basic income.
Yes I know but I pay a lot of tax.
What’s an artist?
does this cover buskers?
crusty payments lol
I can just hear the people complaining “I don’t want my tax money going to people who piss on a canvas and call it art”.
Delighted that my tax money is going towards this. I would’ve loved this when I was younger, to explore music more. Now I’m older I’ve found a balance between full time work and still being creative, but it was incredibly difficult and exhausting/stressful trying to find that balance. I’m looking forward to all the wonderful art these people will produce – our country and our souls will be far richer because of it.
This is a bad idea for so many reasons.
There is a certain type of person for whom this scheme is perfect.
