It’s a trial, which is only being rolled out in areas where body cams are also being trialled. Happy with that.
ICCL has already come out against this, just like they did when they announced the trial of body cams for Gardai. They are to Garda modernisation what PBP are to defence spending…
I can’t believe people still support this. There’s no place for tasers.
We had a case in the papers last week where a guy was stopped by an un marked car with 4 gardai. They illegally searched him. When he said something shitty to them as they were leaving they retaliated by pinning him against the car and soaking his trousers with dirty water so that it looked like he pissed himself. Zero consequences for the Gardai. And now we’ve giving then tasers! This won’t end well.
Imagine thinking this was the end of the world. Get off your phones – this is Ireland not LA . In gangland areas there was guards carrying guns over a decade ago. They just don’t unholster them and wave them around like the yanks. Why would they? They have been properly trained. The tazers are non lethal and worse case scenario you piss yourself being tazed. Probably a decent Saturday night for many.

They need to roll out body cams in conjunction with this though, if anything to protect from lawsuits and prove justified deployment of a taser.
Have you seen the average Irish out in winter? They’ll need a drill as well.
Good. A part of me thinks it’s a bit ridiculous that we still cling on to this “unarmed police force” thing though – I just don’t think it serves anyone in modern times. Not calling for them to be given assault rifles or any yank nonsense like that, but a pistol and the training to use it like their colleagues in the PSNI wouldn’t go amiss, I think.
