On Day 1, it was the Tom Latham and Devon Conway show as New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat first. They put on 323 runs for the opening wicket, thus smashing the record to register the most runs by a New Zealand opening pair in Test history. They also registered the highest opening partnership in the history of the World Test Championship (WTC).
The only wicket to fall was Latham, who scored 137. Conway remains not out on 178.
