What if I told you you’re not too far off. Take this with a grain of salt, it’s been awhile, so I might be WAY off.
TL;DR – Merlin (yes, that Merlin) found the nexus of the multiverse and created the Captain Britain corp to protect it, giving worthy candidates the power to protect their worlds.
He started this millennia before the main Marvel timeframe, implying Merlin’s influence spread the power of Britain across the multiverse.

Came here to say “British” is neither a language nor an accent. It’s not even a dialect.
But I see British and English conflated all the time….
For those that care:
“British” simply refers to someone hailing from Great Britain. And Great Britain (or Britain for short) comprises the 3 ‘countries’ of England, Scotland and Wales. So, someone who is British could be English, Scottish or Welsh – who all speak English with different accents, plus the Welsh speak an entirely different language (+ English).
The United Kingdom is the short version of a full name which is “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”, so it includes all the above plus Northern Ireland but not the rest of Ireland.
To be honest if the we knew there was life on Mars we would have built that ship !
