MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Madison’s La Follette High School highlighted the importance of community Thursday as it celebrated Las Posadas, a Mexican tradition.
The school celebrated by exploring stories of immigration and cultural pride.
Las Posadas is based off a Bible story, where two people they call Maria and Jose search for a place to stay before Jesus’ birth.
The school wanted to bring that idea into today’s world and highlight the experiences of immigrants as they search for a “posada” when they arrive in this country.
“La Follette is a super diverse school,” Jenny Mancera, co-founder of Union Latina said. “We just want to provide spaces for these students to celebrate and feel proud of who they are and where they come from.”
Paulina Bravo, co-founder Union Latina, emphasized how important it is to have these types of events and creating safe spaces.
“It is super important that we can have these spaces open for our students to show who they are, what are the great contributions that they do to this country, in particular now that we’re being targeted.”
Union Latina member Monica Mora said these events bring the feeling of home closer to students.
“To feel like you have that open space and you can have that piece from your family that isn’t here present in school,” said Mora.
The school also collaborated with several other organizations for this event, including BSU and Asian United Consortium.
