I really like pedestrianised streets. Some streets are so iconic that when people are told something will be changed they’re like “NOOOOOO IT WAS FINE HOW IT WAS” but driving in town is horrible and I dunno why anyone wants to do it. I’m never more serene than when I’ve fucked my car in one of the lots and can just walk about 🤣

Thank God. The amount of space given to cars on that street at the expense of pedestrians was criminal
Great news, in favour of every single initiative to pedestrianize in Dublin and remove as much space from cars as possible. Saw a good comment on this on twitter the other day that amounted to: volume of cars will expand to fill all available space.
Good street to pedestrianise, probably not a very important route in the grand scheme of things, it’s just 1 lane, always slow moving but it’s packed with shops and cafes.
Here’s hoping it reinvigorates the street.
A lot of really nice restaurants down that way, but you’d always feel fucking filthy walking it for some reason
Good, i hope this ushers in a new time of counsels having the balls to make the correct decision even if unpopular amongst their base
I imagine anyone that would be sitting outside one of the many restaurants/cafes will be delighted their food won’t taste of exhaust anymore.

I just need to look up a different route to get to Fishamble street now, normally I’d nip up Capel street and across.
Hoping Parliament Street will be next soon, I know it’s in the works but a bit harder as it requires rerouting a few busses around the area. And then let’s hope that college green will be done before the next decade. If we could also get some revision of SWS would be great too, but I kinda gave up on that one for now.
But Anyway great news and about time!
Did you hear the guy from Louis Copeland talking on the radio? He was against it but had no logical reason to oppose it.
Wonderful. Can’t wait for all the businesses to *not* close down.
There was such a good buzz on Capel street during the trials. Lots of nice cafes, bars and eateries on the street + some more quirky places. Rest assured worried people and parents, you will not be forced into the sex shops as part of the pedestrianisation.
Was reading some businesses were saying that people used to be able to park outside and nip inside to get stuff and they would lose that. I think the makeup of that street is way better suited to pedestrians though with bars and restaurants.
I can’t imagine who actually enjoys driving into town to buy a few items from a shop. It’s much more likely it becomes an attractive place to come for people and gets more footfall that way.
People were complaining about deliveries too. I’m not sure how that is going to work but I know Grafton Street allows deliveries in the morning. So if it’s a similar setup. Then you just organise all your deliveries for the morning.
Up until yesterday, I drove down it every morning. I voted to pedestrianise it. I have no complaints and zero regrets, I’m happy it has happened, ***but*** the traffic on surrounding streets this morning was a disaster.
Again, I have zero regrets but I think DCC needs to look at a better flow. As it is it looks like they just closed the street and hoped for the best. It will come as no surprise to anybody that they did no forward planning for the impact this closure would cause.
Formerly Dublin’s main street, great to see it elevated again.
Hon the gays, hopefully Parliament street next

As a taxi driver,I look forward to all the thoughtless drinkers ordering a FreeNow while on Capel st without a thought for where I can actually pick you up.
This is fantastic news, sounds almost too good to be true. Capel street is a really interesting street, now we’ll be able to enjoy jt
Mannix Flynn is getting his legal challenge ready as we speak.
I was on Capel St a couple weeks ago, it’s just glorious in the sun and I’m planning on spending some lazy, warm, tipsy evenings there this summer. Woo!
I used to live on Capel Street, would be great to see it permanently traffic free.
is the pub spot at the top of capel street still cursed?

When I lived in Dublin (over 10 years ago at this point) the pub there kept changing every few months, nothing could stick.

Which is a shame because it was a jazz bar at one point which was really nice. But for 5 or so years it was always a pub but a different owner on a constant basis, so I joked it was a cursed pub.
Imagine a world where r/Ireland goes a day without something from The Journal… I can’t either
The city is going to shite, good luck to any business looking for tradesmen or service providers doing work. It’s a nightmare for parking, traffic is dreadful getting in and out and when you do get parking is too expensive.
I do some work around the city, I immediately add €120 to the bill for parking and to cover the high possibility of being clamped.
Any trades I have contact, which is a lot, will not go near the city centre.
On paper the aggressive stance against driving in the city is welcome but needs backing up from a good public transport system which is regular and not expensive.
Cycling is great for the few that live within a distance that they can cycle but other than that its for a privileged few.

Bring it on and more of it.
