The United States has roughly 3,600 Abrams tanks in storage
Saw several of these on a base here in Oz a few years back, and was told they’d probably be sold for parts once they reached retirement age

Fun fact: years ago, Australian tanks used to be referred to in the Army as “koalas”, i.e. not to be taken overseas or shot at. Â

Yes they get destroyed left and right now in this war so not the value it used to have. But having them at the back line limits what Russia can do tactical and they have to adapt. Always an advantage, and your crew is safe in this box. Add its another tool in the box offensive, just far far more vulnerable than it used to, so will be used more specialized. Heck we might see a push at some time with mbt and gepard in combination.

I wish our government (USA) had the balls to go all in and send the hundreds of Abrams we have sitting in storage that aren’t unarmored and protected. The hulls just sit there waiting to be used as we continue to modernize the hundreds we have in active use.
At some point it becomes use them or lose them as we’ve watch in Ukraine. Russia sending old ass shit into war that only goes some lube and fresh rollers but the rest was from 1970s.
We are at that point. Yes a hull can be revamped but when is it time to call a design done and move on? Didn’t we cancel the SEPv4? So no upgrades and continue running the same shit…
