Hello everyone,

We are going to Lapland with my husband and two kids (8 and 9 years old). Since I will be with the kids and don’t want to drag them around in the middle of the night for an aurora hunt, we decided to do it ourselves. Does anyone know the best spots to see the northern lights as clearly as possible?

Thankyouuu

  1. The best spots would probably just be some sort of open area, like a field where they’re clearly visible. It could help being higher up like on a hill for example. Other than that you can just hope the sky is clear and auroras appear

  2. Asking for the best place to see the aurora is kind of like as asking for the best place to see the stars. You don’t need to hunt for them, if they’re there just look up in the sky. Everything that applies to stargazing also applies to aurora watching: don’t try to peek under trees, go to an open area without too much light pollution (don’t have to go deep into the wilderness, just don’t stand under the street lights.) Fields and frozen lakes are probably the best.

  3. First you need to make sure there’s a solar activity – look here https://rwc-finland.fmi.fi/ or the Aurora Compass app (android, idk if there are ios versions)

Second – a dark spot, preferably on the lake. You van check the light pollution here https://www.lightpollutionmap.info/

If you’re gonna make photos – get a tripod.

And you’re going to need some luck and patiens.

  4. Please be respectful towards the locals and stay away from yards or private roads/land. Usually there is a sign, but everything is not behind a gate as it has not been a strict custom.

  5. It’s dark most of the day, so you don’t need to wait long. It’s dark far before bedtime. So don’t worry. Might want to keep an eye on solar flair radars which predict auroras quite well. But so far up, even faint events will create auroras. So just keep an eye on the sky. And have a field or open space around, where you can go and have a unobstructed view of the night sky.

  6. *deep sigh* I miss having a proper winter…
