WASHINGTON, D.C. — Calling a targeted attack in Syria a “declaration of vengeance,” Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth says U.S. forces are going after ISIS fighters following the attack on Iowa National Guard soldiers that claimed the life of two men and a civilian interceptor.

Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown, and Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, 25, of Des Moines, were killed Saturday in an attack that the U.S. Central Command said was carried out by the Islamic State group in central Syria (ISIS).

Hegseth made the announcement about retaliatory strikes on social media Friday afternoon.

CBS News reports dozens of targets across central Syria.

U.S. Central Command described the operation as a massive retaliatory strike.
