Bondi Beach shooting: One suspect in custody in critical condition • FRANCE 24 English

So, as you saw there, we did hear from the Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanesy. We also heard from the New South Wales Premier Chris Mins and New South Wales police who have all uh confirmed that uh the incident uh at Bondai Beach today was a has been designated a terrorist attack that targeted the Jewish community uh on the first day of this Jewish holiday Hanukkah. Uh we know that uh 12 people uh are dead including uh one of the gunmen. Uh 29 people have been injured including two policemen. Uh one of the alleged shooters is in custody and in a critical condition. Uh police have also um said that one of the gunmen, one of the alleged gunmen has been identified. His name is Navided Aram. He’s from southwest Sydney. his home is currently being searched. They’re also investigating whether a third shooter is involved, uh, but they can’t confirm that at this time. Uh, and they also mentioned that they found a suspected explosive device in uh, a vehicle linked to one of the alleged gunmen and that that um is currently being investigated. Uh, the investigation is ongoing. Obviously, it’s it’s in the early stages. Um uh it is being led by counterterrorism uh police uh and they have assured um assured us that you know no stone will be left unturned. Um it’s you know still a developing story. Police are still down at Bondai Beach obviously. Uh so you know more and more information is coming out. Um this only happened within the last few hours. So again, this is sort of a an a moving uh situation, but authorities have uh assured uh the public that uh there was no longer an active threat at Mondai Beach. >> Yeah, an attack of this nature should be shocking anywhere in the world, but especially in Australia where mass shootings are pretty rare, aren’t they? >> Yeah, absolutely. Very rare. Um uh I you know I when I spoke to you earlier I mentioned the Port Arthur massacre in the state of Tasmania. Uh in April 1996 35 people were killed, 23 people were wounded uh and that was uh sort of a turning point for Australia if you like uh especially when it comes to uh gun laws. Uh that sort of prompted it was it was the deadliest massacre in modern Australian history. in that uh that incident, that tragedy uh prompted uh significant changes in gun control laws uh here in Australia. Um so uh there was a led to a significant decline in mass shootings and if anything it was um it’s just it’s just so rare. So for something of this nature to happen here uh now it’s it’s incredibly shocking. Um I I live in Bondi Beach myself. So this is this happened, you know, a few minutes down the road from where I live. Um so just for it to happen in Yeah. in a neighborhood I know so very well. Uh where I go walking every day, it’s it’s incredibly shocking. It’s incredibly sad. Um and um yeah, I think I think the whole the whole community, the local community, but just Australia, you know, Australians in general are just absolutely shocked because this is like you said, this is something that does not happen in um here in our backyard.

At least 12 people were killed and almost 30 wounded when gunmen fired on a Jewish holiday event at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday in what Australian police and officials described as a terrorist attack. One suspected gunman was killed and another was in a critical condition, New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon told a press conference. At least 29 people injured, including two police officers, were taken to hospital, he said. FRANCE 24’s Richelle Harrison reports from Sydney.

  1. Sad and very disturbing!!
After witnessing the, Bondi Beach terror attack in Australia, I hope Western societies, including Australians, fully understand the brutality of the terror attack in Pahalgam, India.
Those who support Pakistan and its terror outfits should be held accountable under international law.

  2. That bystander, fruitshop owner Ahmed El Ahmed who physically crept up and disarmed one of the gunmen, and police who arrived to this horror, are heroes and saved so many more lives. I was there this evening at Bondi beach, dining nearby when people rushed in screaming off the street. If you should ever have such a terrible situation occur in your life, move everyone to the back of the premises and behind the solid walls and out of sight, and barricade the door till police advise clear. This is what me and the restaurant manager did. Hope you never experience this. My heart goes out to those who lost their lives, and those who are in all our main Sydney hospitals undergoing life saving care and surgery tonight.

  3. Ahmed El Ahmed is a hero. It’s everyday people like him who show we do our best when we look out for our community ❤
