  1. Try “Festen”(The Celebration) or “Pelle Erobreren” (Pelle the Conqueror) as well. In my oppinion the best Danish movies ever made.

  2. You should try and check out the movies, Blinkende Lygter (Flickering Lights) and/or De Grønne Slagtere ( The Green Butchers).
Both are dark comedy’s, staring Mads Mikkelsen, and they are funny as hell. Basically anything made by Anders Thomas Jensen is worth a watch, if you can find it some where.

  3. Yay… I love that movie too. Have you seen some of his old work? This movie is brilliant, but he used to star in some ridiculously funny dark comedies, where the characters kept outdoing each other in crazyness-levels.

Movies like Blinkende Lygter (one of the best movies of all times. I don’t think you’ll meet a Dane who doesn’t know and love this one). De Grønne Slagtere and Adams Æbler are also really good.

In general…. If Mads is starring, Imma watching.. He also played my favorite character in a Danish show called Rejseholdet. Four seasons of godness, where he plays a cheeky police officer.

If you like heartbreak, check out ‘Elsker dig forevigt’. It is filmed using the dogma principles set out by Lars von Trier, but once you get used to the sound and camera work, it is absolutely amazing.

  4. Try “the green butcher” or “Adams apples”
Theyre classics, very funny as well, they really capsulate danish dry and dark humour.

  5. You can also find a lot of them on Amazon and rent/own cheap. My husband introduced me to the more nuanced Danish films after emigrating to the US.

  6. I’m Danish and have watched pretty much every movie mentioned in this thread. Mads Mikkelsen is a great actor in Danish movies but his international career is amazing. I live in the US and over here many people talk about his role as Hannibal Lector in “Hannibal’. It’s absolutely chilling and he gives a perfect spin on the character. Gourmet chef, fantastic psychiatrist, ruthless killer, and cannibal. All in one.

  7. Maybe we missed something, but both me and my girlfriend thought it was so boring and predictable… We talked about it when we first saw the movie (edit: trailer), what we thought the plot was gonna be, and what was gonna happen… When we saw the movie, everything we had talked about happened, with zero surprises…

Anyone care to elaborate what makes this film great to so many people?

  8. Oh there’s lots of great Danish movies. Sadly most of them haven’t been translated to English even with subtitles.
